A coating composition includes (a) a melamine resin having imino and methylol functional groups that together comprise 30 mole % or greater of the total functionality of the melamine resin; and (b) at least one polymer reactive with (a) that is obtained from components including polytetrahydrofuran and a carboxylic acid or anhydride thereof. The polytetrahydrofuran includes greater than 20 weight % of the components that form the polymer (b) and the carboxylic acid or anhydride thereof includes greater than 5 weight % of the components that form the polymer (b). The polymer (b) has an acid value of at least 15 based on the total resin solids of the polymer (b).

Coating compositions curable at low temperatures and coatings formed therefrom

Disclosed is a coating composition comprising a resinous binder prepared from a reaction mixture comprising (a) a first component; (b) a second component; and (c) a third component comprising a block copolymer having (i) a first block comprising units having functional groups reactive with at least one of the first and second components and (ii) a second block comprising units having functional groups that promote adhesion to a polymeric substrate, provided that the first component, the second component, and the block copolymer differ from each other. The block copolymer may also be used as an additive in a coating composition.

The present invention is directed to curable film-forming compositions comprising a film-forming resin and a crosslinking agent. The film-forming resin contains a polymer having functional aromatic groups derived from functional aromatic acids. The present invention further provides multi-component composite coating compositions comprising a first film-forming composition applied to a substrate to form a primer or base coat, and a second film-forming composition applied on top of the primer or base coat to form a top coat, the top coat comprising the composition described above. Coating compositions prepared from the curable compositions of the present invention demonstrate superior gloss and acid etch resistance properties, making them ideally suited for automotive applications.

Curable film-forming compositions containing ortho-hydroxyl aromatic functional acrylic polymers

A process for forming a multilayer composite coating on a substrate is provided. The process includes forming an electrodeposition coating layer on the substrate by electrodeposition of a curable electrodepositable coating composition over at least a portion of the substrate. Optionally, the coated substrate is heated to a temperature and for a time sufficient to cure the electrodeposition coating layer. A basecoating layer is formed on the electrodeposition coating layer by depositing an aqueous curable basecoating composition directly onto at least a portion of the electrodeposition coating layer. Optionally, the basecoating layer is dehydrated. A top coating layer is formed on the basecoating layer by depositing a curable top coating composition which is substantially pigment-free directly onto at least a portion of the basecoating layer. The top coating layer, the basecoating layer, and, optionally, the electrodeposition coating layer are cured simultaneously.
