A battery includes an anode chamber configured to contain an anolyte and including an anode, a cathode chamber configured to contain a catholyte including a cathode, and a separator between the anode chamber and the cathode chamber. The anode includes sodium, and the cathode includes aluminum. The battery is configured to be operated above a melting point of the anolyte and the catholyte, such that the anolyte is a molten anolyte and the catholyte is a molten catholyte.

An ionic liquid catholyte includes an ionic liquid, such as 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (EMICl), at least one half of a redox couple, and a sodium salt. The ionic liquid catholyte is suitable for use as a liquid cathode in an electrochemical device including an anode current collector, an anode in contact with the anode current collector, a cathode current collector, a liquid cathode in contact with the cathode current collector, and a solid electrolyte separating the anode and cathode current collectors. The one half of the redox couple includes a metal in a first oxidation state that is oxidized or reduced to yield the metal in a second oxidation state, and the redox couple includes the metal in the first oxidation state and the metal in the second oxidation state. The solid electrolyte is permeable to sodium ions and is in contact with the liquid anode and the liquid cathode.

Ionic liquid catholytes and electrochemical devices containing same

A rechargeable battery cell has an organic-liquid electrolyte contacting a dendrite free alkali-metal anode. The alkali-metal anode may be a liquid at the operating temperature that is immobilized by absorption into a porous membrane. The alkali-metal anode may be a solid that wets a porous-membrane separator, where the contact between the solid alkali-metal anode and the liquid electrolyte is at micropores or nanopores in the porous-membrane separator. The use of a dendrite-free solid lithium cell was demonstrated in a symmetric cell with a porous cellulose-based separator membrane. A K-ion rechargeable cell was demonstrated with a liquid K&#x2014;Na alloy anode immobilized in a porous carbon membrane using an organic-liquid electrolyte with a Celgard&#xae; or glass-fiber separator.
