The present invention relates to a method of joining polymer coated steel pipes comprising the steps of&#x2014;providing polymer coated pipe segments with an uncoated length on both ends of the segments; &#x2014;welding the polymer coated pipe segments together; &#x2014;applying a curable polymer (A) onto the uncoated length of the welded pipe segments to form an first coating layer; and&#x2014;applying a polymer composition (B) onto the first coating layer to form a topcoat layer with a thickness of 0.5 to 10 mm, wherein the polymer composition (B) has a melt flow rate MFRof 1.0 to 6.0 g/10 min, determined according to ISO 1133 at a temperature of 190&#xb0; C. under a load of 2.16 kg, and includes a base resin comprising (B-1) a non-elastomeric polyethylene in an amount of 60 to 85 wt % of the total polymer composition being produced in a process using a single-site catalyst, and (B-2) an elastomer comprising a copolymer of ethylene and at least one polar comonomer, wherein component (B-1) or components (B-1) and (B-2) have been grafted with an acid grafting agent and the use of polymer composition (B) as topcoat layer with a thickness of 0.5 to 10 mm in a coating of coated steel pipe field-joints, a method of coating a steel pipe and the use of polymer composition (B) for the coating of steel pipe joints or steel pipes.

Heterophasic polypropylene composition having an MFR(2.16 kg, 230&#xb0; C.) of 3.0 to 7.0 g/10 min, determined according to ISO 1 133, and a Vicat A50 softening temperature of more than 110&#xb0; C. measured according to DIN EN ISO 306 at 10 N on an injection molded test specimen with the dimensions of 80&#xd7;10&#xd7;4 mmand a heat rate of 50&#xb0; C./h including a propylene random copolymer matrix phase (A), and an ethylene-propylene copolymer rubber phase (B) dispersed within the matrix phase, wherein the heterophasic polypropylene composition has a fraction soluble in p-xylene at 23&#xb0; C. (XCS fraction), and a fraction insoluble in p-xylene at 23&#xb0; C. (XCU fraction), said heterophasic polypropylene composition having a tensile modulus of 450 to 850 MPa when measured according to ISO 527-2 at 23&#xb0; C. temperature with an elongation rate of 1 mm/min on injection molded test specimens type 1A prepared according to ISO 1873-2; and a normalized maleic anhydride index IMA equal to or less than 0.036 &#x3bc;m.

Soft heterophasic polyolefin composition

The present publication discloses a method for coating pipes. The method comprises applying curable first polymer (e.g. epoxy) onto the surface of the pipe and partially curing the first polymer or leaving the first polymer uncured to in order to form a reactive first polymer layer. Thereafter, the pipe with the reactive first polymer layer is heated and a second polymer (e.g. polyolefin) is applied directly onto the heated reactive first polymer layer, whereby the two polymers react and form a protective coating on the pipe or pipe section. In particular, the heating can be carried out in two steps such that the first polymer stays reactive until the application of the second polymer.

Coated pipe comprising polyolefin layer with enhanced adhesion

The invention relates to an apparatus and method for coating a pipe or a section of a pipe with a polymer layer. The apparatus comprises an applicator for applying polymer melt on the surface of a pipe or pipe section, a roller for pressing the polymer applied by the applicator towards the pipe or pipe section, and means for circumferentially moving the applicator and the roller around the periphery of the pipe or pipe section. According to the invention the apparatus further comprises a drive for rotating the roller as the roller is moving around the periphery of a pipe or pipe section. By means of the invention, higher quality coatings can be applied to field joints of steel pipes, for example.

Apparatus and method for coating pipes or pipe sections

Method and apparatus for coating a pipe or a pipe section with a layer of at least one polymer. The method includes providing the pipe or the pipe section having an outer surface defining the periphery of the pipe or the pipe section; applying on the outer surface of the pipe or pipe section a layer of at least one polymer material in melt stage using a nozzle, which is mounted on a carriage capable of travelling along the periphery of the pipe or the pipe section; and moving the carriage along at least a part of the periphery during the application of the polymer material to form a layer on the surface of the pipe or the pipe section that is particularly useful for coating field joints in pipelines.

The invention relates to a coated pipe comprising a core, an adhesion layer coated on the core and an outer coating layer coated on the adhesion layer, wherein at least the adhesion layer comprises a propylene polymer composition comprising: (A) a propylene homo- or copolymer, and (B) an elastomeric component and to the use of such a propylene polymer composition for coating a pipe.

Coating composition

The present invention deals with coated pipes having a layer of multimodal polyethylene. The multimodal ethylene copolymer is a copolymer of ethylene with one or more alpha-olefin comonomers having from 4 to 10 carbon atoms and has a weight average molecular weight of from 70000 g/mol to 250000 g/mol, the ratio of the weight average molecular weight to the number average molecular weight, Mw/Mn, of from 15 to 50, a melt index MFRof from 0.05 g/10 min to 5 g/10 min, a melt index MFRof from 0.5 to 10 g/10 min and a density of from 930 kg/m to 955 kg/m. Further, the multimodal ethylene copolymer comprises the multimodal ethylene copolymer comprises from 49 to 59% based on the weight of the multimodal ethylene copolymer a low molecular weight ethylene homopolymer component, said low molecular weight ethylene homopolymer having a weight average molecular weight of from 5000 g/mol to 70000 g/mol; and from 51 to 41% based on the weight of the multimodal ethylene copolymer a high molecular weight ethylene copolymer component, said high molecular weight ethylene copolymer having a weight average molecular weight of from 100000 g/mol to 700000 g/mol. The pipes can be coated with high throughput and good production economy. The coatings have good mechanical properties.

Process for coating a pipe with high throughput using multimodal ethylene copolymer, and coated pipes obtained thereof

The present invention deals with coated pipes having a layer of multimodal polyethylene. The multimodal ethylene copolymer is a copolymer of ethylene with one or more alpha-olefin comonomers having from 4 to 10 carbon atoms and has a weight average molecular weight of from 70000 g/mol to 250000 g/mol and a melt index MFRof from 0.05 g/10 min to 5 g/10 min, a melt index MFRof from 0.5 to 10 g/10 min and a density of from 945 kg/mto 958 kg/m. The coatings have a high stiffness, good properties at elevated temperatures and acceptable stress-cracking properties.

Coated pipes having improved mechanical properties at elevated temperatures and a method of production thereof

Conventional coating compositions have the disadvantage of being insufficiently coatable and having an unsatisfactory environmental stress cracking resistance. Now a coating composition has been found which has both good coating processability and environmental stress cracking resistance. It comprises a multimodal ethylene polymer, which contains from 80 to 100% by weight of ethylene repeating units and from 0 to 20% by weight of C -C &agr;-olefin repeating units, has a density of between 0.915 g/cm and 0.955 g/cm , and is a blend of at least a first ethylene polymer having a first average molecular weight and a first molecular weight distribution and a second ethylene polymer having a second average molecular weight, which is higher than said first average molecular weight, and a second molecular weight distribution, said blend having a third average molecular weight and a third molecular weight distribution.
