The present invention relates to a direct alcohol fuel cell (DAFC) comprising an anode terminal electrically connected to an anode catalyst in fluid communication with a fuel supply; a cathode catalyst in fluid communication with a gaseous oxidant; an electrically conducting cathode plate having a collecting element with evaporation holes, a bendable segment and a terminal site, which collecting element is electrically connected to the cathode catalyst; and a housing containing the collecting element, and a proton exchange membrane (PEM) between the anode catalyst and the cathode catalyst.

Direct alcohol fuel cell

The present invention relates to a direct alcohol fuel cell comprising a housing containing a proton exchange membrane (PEM) separating an anode section from a cathode section, which anode section and which cathode section are contained in the housing, the cathode section comprising a cathode collection element having one or more ventilation holes, which cathode collection element is electrically connected to a cathode catalyst, which cathode catalyst is in diffusive communication with a gaseous oxidant, and the anode section comprising an anode collection element electrically connected to an anode catalyst, the DAFC comprising an oleophobic filter covering the ventilation hole(s). The oleophobic filter may be held in place using any appropriate means as desired. The fuel cell is suited for a microelectronic device.

Novel peptide nucleic acids and novel linked peptide nucleic acids, form triple stranded structures with nucleic acids. The peptide nucleic acids include ligands such as naturally occurring nucleobases attached to a peptide backbone through a suitable linker. Other nucleobases including C-pyrimidines and iso-pyrimidines can be used as the ligands in Hoogsteen strands to increase binding affinity. Two peptide nucleic acid strands are joined together with a linker to form a bis-peptide nucleic acid. The individual strands of the peptide nucleic acids in the bis compounds can be orientated either parallel or antiparallel to each other.

A method and apparatus for sequentially degrading at least a portion of a polymer of backbone repeating units, the polymer having a terminal repeating unit comprised of a nucleophile and a backbone carbonyl carbon distant from the nucleophile, comprising the steps of first initiating attack of said nucleophile upon said backbone carbonyl carbon by raising the energy level to activate said nucleophile for said attack. Secondly, forming a ring comprising the terminal repeating unit, thereby simultaneously releasing the ring and generating a shortened polymer having a terminal repeating unit capable of nucleophile attack upon the backbone carbonyl carbon and, lastly, maintaining the reaction conditions necessary for repeating steps a and b until the portion of the polymer desired is degraded. In a related embodiment, polyamide nucleic acid (PNA) sequences can be determined by generating a nested set of polymer fragments, each fragment having N-x repeating units where N is the total number of repeating units in the parent polymer and x is the number of degradation cycles the fragment has been subjected to, and then analyzing the nested set of polymer fragments to determine polymer sequence.
