The present invention generally relates to the use of pre-formed bodies of Chemically Bonded Ceramics (CBCs) biomaterial for implantation purposes wherein the bodies are prepared ex vivo allowing process parameters to be optimized for desired long term properties of the resulting CBC biomaterial. More particularly, the pre-formed CBC material bodies of the present invention are sintered. The pre-formed body of CBC material is machined to the desired geometry and then implanted using a CBC cementation paste for fixation of the body to tissue. The invention also relates to a method of preparing pre-formed bodies of CBC biomaterial for implantation purposes, methods of preparing an implant thereof having desired geometry, and a method of implantation of the implant, as well as a kit for use in the method of implantation.

Monolithic bodies of sintered chemically bonded ceramic (CBC) biomaterial prepared ex vivo for implantation, preparation and use thereof

The present invention relates to a calcium aluminate based paste forming a chemically bonded biomaterial on hydration thereof for in vivo anchoring of new implants, or stabilizing of existing implants in situ to an adjacent bone tissue, which paste provides a controlled pH value and temperature as well as initial hardening time. By virtue of the pH value and temperature the paste exhibits antibacterial and/or bacteriostatic properties. The present invention also relates to a method of preparing implants to be implanted wherein the implant is coated with the paste, a method of implanting a coated implant, as well as methods of preventing and treating implant related conditions, such as periimplantitis, and kit for preparing the paste. The invention is especially intended for re-stabilization of dental implants, and implantation into low quality bone tissue.

Calcium aluminate based paste for stabilizing dental implants and restoring tissue attachment after surgery and methods therefor

The present invention relates to ceramic precursor material exhibiting injectability and properties that make the material suitable as a carrier material used in drug delivery. According to the invention this is accomplished by selecting a microstructure based on pre-reacted phases and after injection established phases, which contain anti-infective and/or anti-inflammatory drugs. The present invention also relates to a cured ceramic material and a method of manufacturing said cured material. The precursor and the cured ceramic material according to the present invention can suitably be used for filling orthopaedic cavities and other bone voids.

Drug implant carrier for drug delivery

Ceramic precursor compositions and chemically bonded ceramic (CBC) materials, especially Ca-based, and a composite biomaterial suitable for orthopaedic applications. The CBC-system includes a binding phase (chemical cement) and additional phases with specified chemistry imparting to the biomaterial the ability of initial strength followed by interaction with the body tissue including body liquid, to form a resorbable or partly resorbable biomaterial. The ceramic precursor composition includes at least one silicate with Ca as the main cation with a resorption rate less or equal to that of the bone in-growth rate. The silicate will form the binding phase of the cured material. Implants and surface coated devices are also disclosed. The cured material exhibits a compressive strength exceeding 100 MPa.

Resorbable ceramic compositions

A dental cement system, including an aqueous hydration liquid and a powdered material that essentially consists of an inorganic cement system, which powdered material has the capacity to form a complex, chemically bonded material with inorganic as well as organic phases with properties suitable for cementation of implant to another implant and/or to tooth or bone tissue.

Dental cement system, a powdered material and a hydration liquid therefor, and ceramic material formed therefrom

A system for a dental filling material or an implant material, alternatively a system for bonding between a tooth or a bone and a dental filling material and a implant material, respectively, which system comprises a water based hydration liquid and a powdered material, the binder phase of which powdered material essentially consisting of a calcium based cement system, which powdered material has the capacity following saturation with the liquid reacting with the binder phase to hydrate to a chemically bonded ceramic material. According to the invention, said powdered material and/or said hydration liquid comprises water soluble phosphate or a phase that has the capacity to form water soluble phosphate, whereby the system exhibits the capacity during hydration to form apatite. The invention also relates to the powdered material and the hydration liquid as such, an implant material and a method of achieving bonding.

The present invention deals with the initial hydration reaction of highly alkaline chemically bonded ceramic systems such as Ca-aluminate and Ca-silicate, exhibiting a controlled pH development, reduced from very high levels to be in a pH range of 7-9 by the use of an internal buffer system added to the CBC type biomaterial used. The invention is especially intended for endodontic, orthopaedic applications and/or soft tissue applications and/or drug delivery carrier applications.

Powdered CBC system with improved reaction feature

A chemically bonded biomaterial element composed of an inorganic cement, exhibiting minimal dimensional changes upon hardening and long-time use, improved mechanical properties and improved translucency. An algorithm to describe the micro-structure is expressed as where &#x3bb; is the distance between filler particles of mean size d, and Vis the volume content of non-reacted cement and added filler, and where &#x3bb;&#x2266;10 &#x3bc;m. The invention also relates to a device in connection with the preparation of a chemically bonded biomaterial element according to the invention.

Chemically bonded biomaterial with tailored properties

Powdered material, the binder phase of which mainly consists of a cement-based system, which powdered material has the capacity following saturation with a liquid reacting with the binder phase to hydrate to a radiopaque and chemically bonded ceramic material. According to the invention, said binder phase mainly consists of CaO.AlO(ss) and/or 3CaO.AlO(ss). The material also contains one or more heavy atom types with a density over 5 g/cm. The invention also relates to a method for manufacturing the powdered material and the chemically bonded ceramic material formed from the powdered material, in which said binder phase has a mol ratio AlO.3HO (ss) to 3CaO.AlO.6HO (ss) of a maximum of 2:1.

Powdered material, the binder phase of which mainly consists of a cement-based system, which powdered material has the capacity following saturation with a liquid reacting with the binder phase to hydrate to a chemically bonded ceramic material, preferably for dental purposes. According to the invention the powdered material has a composition and/or structure suitable for giving the ceramic material translucence in the hydrated state. The invention also relates to the ceramic material produced by hydration of the powdered material.

Powdered material and ceramic material manufactured therefrom

An injectable heat generating biocompatible ceramic compositions based on hydraulic calcium aluminate, which can be used for therapeutic treatment in vivo, such as tumour treatment, pain control, vascular treatment, drug activation etc, when curing in situ, and which form a biocompatible solid material that can be left in the body for prolonged periods of time without causing negative health effects, and can also be used to restore the mechanical properties of the skeleton after cancerous diseases as well as in a medical implant, an orthopaedic implant, and a dental implant as a dental filling material.

Heat generating biocompatible ceramic materials

Surface coating method for deposition of a chemically bonded ceramic coating on a substrate, includes the steps of preparing a curable coating slurry, depositing a coating of the slurry on at least a section of the substrate surface, and hardening the slurry. The step of preparing a curable coating slurry includes mixing calcium aluminate powder with water and at least one water-reducing-agent, such that a water-to-cement ratio in the range of 0.1 to 0.9 is achieved.

Coating method and coated devices

The invention describes a low temperature method for producing multi-layered or multi-phased coatings. With the technique according to the present invention, surface coatings with controlled variations in terms of chemical composition, phase composition, porosity, surface roughness, mechanical properties, biocompatibility, etc can be achieved. The method of coating a substrate surface comprising the steps of preparing one powder mixture, or several powder mixtures having different chemical composition, wherein at least one of said powder mixtures comprise a non-hydrated hydraulic ceramic powder binder phase, pre-treating a substrate surface, to increase the adhesion between the substrate and the ceramic coating, applying one or more different layers on top of each other of the non-hydrated powder mixture on the substrate, and finally, hydrating the powder layer/layers in a curing agent containing ions of carbonates, phosphates or fluorides.

Method of making structured ceramic coatings and coated devices prepared with the method

A chemically bonded ceramic material based on calcium aluminate hydrate with additives of primarily calcium titanate, but also chemically similar compounds. The material is a biocompatible material for implants, particularly for orthopaedic and dental applications. The material possesses the properties required for an orthopaedic biocement. It cures through reaction with water and develops its strength within a short period of time, has good workability prior to curing, is shape stable, has a low heat generation during curing, and is friendly to adjacent tissues.
