A wheelchair brake comprising an activation lever, including a handle, the activation lever having a pivot, a pawl with pivot means at one end and a trapezoidal-shaped raised portion near its second end, a brake support housing having a notched bottom side plate, a U-shaped clamp for slidedly engaging a leaf spring at the bottom of the housing, the leaf spring having a handle at one end and a Z-shaped portion at an opposite end extending into the housing through the notch in the bottom side plate, the Z-shaped portion further including a lancing detent at an intermediate portion, and a stop, wherein the stop, the activation lever, the pawl with raised portion, the Z-shaped leaf spring portion and lancing detent are in cooperative engagement in various combinations depending on whether the wheelchair brake is in neutral position, locked position, or in on-guard position for up-incline aid and down-incline drag braking.

Modular seating comprises flat side frame members including chair frames and bench and table frames, with each frame including means to bolt seats and tables to the sides thereof, the units being constructable as free-standing components or as interconnected seats, tables, and benches. The frames are formed of laminations having overlapping laminated joints wherein laminations of intersecting members extend all the way through the joints. The back rest has a frame without a rigid frame member at the top of the back rest.

An improved panel wall system is disclosed with means for interconnecting the panels in any desired angular relationship while providing a sight barrier through the joint. As many of the panels may be connected as are desired; and they may be placed in any desired configuration. Each panel includes an insert assembly to provide its exterior face; and these may be removed and changed, if desired. A full line of shelving and cabinets may be assembled to the panels with a limited number of interchangeable components. The cabinets include a flipper door which will not rack when opened or closed, and which slides beneath the top of the cabinet in the open position, yet has its edges flush with the top and bottom of the cabinet in the closed position.

The system includes a side-folding, extendable frame comprising a plurality of generally U-shaped tubular frame members arranged on their sides so that the base of the 'U' alternately forms rear and front legs for the frame. The ends of adjacent frame members are connected for rotation about horizontal axes by couplers which limit rotation of the frame members so that the frame has a zig-zag shape in the use position with all rear legs inclined toward one side of the frame and all front legs inclined uniformly toward the other side of the frame. Seats extend between and are supported by the frame members. Although various types of seating may be used, in a preferred embodiment, each seat is hinged at its side to an associated frame member, so that in the storage position, the frame members and seats are folded vertically to side-by-side relation, and the seats nest within each other for minimum space. A dolly may be used to fold the seating, and transport it to and from storage.

A chair is formed from two side frame sections each including a tubular frame and leg assembly with expanded metal secured to it. The side sections are encapsulated in foam which adheres to and completely encompasses the expanded metal. A seat cushion and foamed front skirt are added to the foamed side frame sections. A flat skirt is provided to completely follow the periphery of the chair just above the floor; and two chairs may be joined at any desired orientation relative to each other by a doubly-grooved joinder member coupling the lower peripheral metal skirts together.

Seating structure for a chair grouping includes a frame having a lower U-shaped front runner for each chair and a separate side frame member extending upwardly from the top of the runner at each side and rearwardly about the back cushion. For in-line chair arrangements, the side frame members extend downwardly at the center of the chair back and are connected to U-shaped rear runners of adjacent chairs. For zig-zag chair arrangements, the side frame members extend rearward of the chair back to provide for a row of oppositely facing chairs and thence downwardly where they are connected to U-shaped front runners of the opposed chairs which are staggered relative to the first chairs. The side frame members are interchangeable, as are the runners; and they are connected together by means of an H-shaped connector which also serves to connect the seat of the chairs to the frame.

In furniture construction a joint is formed between an upright post and the dovetail shaped end of a rail member by the clamping action of a pair of disc-shaped cap members having coaxially slanted interior peripheral portions that mate with the notches of the dovetail rail end. The cap members are mounted on an axially extending rod, and screw threads allow one of the cap members to be rotated into clamping position. A sleeve on the rod and extending between the cap members has vertical ribs for interfitting with vertical grooves in the ends of rail members to prevent overturning of the rail members. In certain embodiments, provision is made for preloading of joint elements. Various arrangements of joined elements make a wide range of furniture assemblies possible.
