Methods and systems for thermal management of hardware resources are disclosed. To improve the likelihood of the computer implemented services being provided, the systems may include information transmission topologies that are more likely to properly transmit operating point information (e.g., actual fan rates, rates at which fans are to operate, etc.) between management entities such as thermal managers and entities managed by the thermal managers such as fans (and/or other types of gas flow control components). By doing so, the system may be more likely to provide thermal management services as intended by using the transmitted information that is more likely to be accurate.

Current mode fan control and tachometer reporting design

A voltage regulator includes a first portion with a first converter phase and a second portion with second and third converter phases, and a compensation inductor. The first converter phase receives an input voltage and provides an output voltage through a first inductor. The second converter phase receives the input voltage and provides the output voltage through a first primary winding of a first coupled inductor. The first coupled inductor includes a first secondary winding magnetically coupled to the first primary winding. The third converter phase receives the input voltage and provides the output voltage through a second primary winding of a second coupled inductor. The second coupled inductor includes a second secondary winding magnetically coupled to the second primary winding. The compensation inductor, first secondary winding, and of the second secondary winding are coupled in series between a ground plane.

Hybrid voltage regulator architecture

Embodiments of systems and methods for detecting short circuits in a load are described. In an illustrative, non-limiting embodiment, a short circuit detection system includes a first circuit, a second circuit, and a controller. The first circuit has an output and an input coupled to a load and an auxiliary power source through a resistor, while the second circuit is configured to enable an output of the short circuit detection circuit for a specified period of time following application of auxiliary power at the auxiliary power source. The controller includes computer-executable instructions to monitor the output of the first circuit, and allow or disallow a main power source from powering the load based upon whether a short circuit condition exists.

Adaptive short circuit detection system and method for an information handling system (IHS)

Systems and methods for operating a power source as a heating device in an Information Handling System (IHS) are described. In some embodiments, an IHS may include a processor and a memory coupled to the processor, the memory having program instructions stored thereon that, upon execution, cause the IHS to: receive an indication to increase a temperature of the IHS and, in response to the indication, concurrently set a first power supply in source mode and a second power supply in sink mode.

Operating a power source as a heating device in an information handling system (IHS)

A power system may include a plurality of voltage regulator phases each configured to generate an output voltage at its output from an input voltage, a switched capacitor power converter sharing its output with the outputs of the plurality of voltage regulator phases and configured to, when enabled, generate the output voltage at its output from the input voltage, and a power controller configured to selectively enable and disable the switched capacitor power converter based on electrical current requirements of the power system.

System and method of utilizing LLC converters

An information handling system includes a power supply and a power assist unit. The power supply powers a power rail. The power assist unit includes a power storage element, a converter including a semiconductor device coupled to provide power from the power storage element to the power rail, and a controller configured to receive a load indication that indicates a power demanded by the load and to provide an intermediate output based upon the load indication. The controller includes a boost element to receive the intermediate output and to provide a controller output. The controller output is a sum of a bias voltage level provided by the bias element and the intermediate output. The controller output is coupled to a gate terminal of the semiconductor device. The converter provides power from the power storage element to the power rail in response to the controller output.

The power assist unit is coupled to the power rail and includes a power storage element, a converter coupled to the power storage element and to the power rail, and a controller. The controller receives a hold-up signal from the information handling system, and in response to receiving the hold-up signal, directs the converter to provide power from the power storage element to the power rail. The hold-up signal is based upon the input power indications and upon the output power indications.

Systems and methods for configurable voltage regulator (VR) controllers. In some embodiments, an Information Handling System (IHS) may include: a processor; and a voltage regulator (VR) coupled to the processor, the VR configured to: identify, via a VR controller, a number of phases coupled to the voltage regulator in response to detection of a power-on-reset event; and select, via the VR controller, one of a plurality of different configuration files to be applied to the voltage regulator in response to the identification.

An information handling system includes a power supply unit (PSU) and a power assist unit (PAU). The PSU provides a power rail to power a load, and a constant current indication that indicates whether the power supply unit is operating in a constant current mode. The PAU is coupled to the power rail, and includes a power storage element, a converter coupled to the power storage element and to the power rail, and a controller. The controller receives an enable signal when the constant current indication indicates that the first power supply unit is operating in the constant current mode, and in response, the controller directs the converter to convert a voltage from the power storage element and to a current to the power rail to meet an additional demand of the load for power.

A method includes measuring an initial voltage a bulk capacitor at a power supply, controlling a power factor correction circuit to disable charging of the bulk capacitor for a predetermined period of time, and measuring a final voltage at the bulk capacitor at completion of the period of time. The method further includes measuring a first average power provided to a load receiving power from the voltage converter, the load external to the power supply, and determining a capacitance of the bulk capacitor based on the initial voltage, the final voltage, and the first average power.

The method includes determining, via a master voltage regulator (VR) controller, a plurality of phase shifts for a plurality of VRs configured as a master VR and at least one slave VR. The phase shifts are determined such that the VRs switch at different times from each other. A common clock signal and the phase shifts are transmitted to each of the slave VRs.

Synchronized switching of voltage regulators in an information handling system

Systems and methods for individual phase temperature monitoring and balance control in a multi-phase voltage regulator may include a plurality of smart power stages including a first smart power stage and a second smart power stage and a voltage regulator controller. The voltage regulator controller may send a first control signal to the first smart power stage to enable the first smart power stage to send a first temperature of the first smart power stage to the voltage regulator controller during a first phase of a switching cycle. The voltage regulator controller may also determine that the first temperature received by the voltage regulator controller corresponds to the first smart power stage based on the first control signal. The voltage regulator controller may further send a second control signal to the second smart power stage to enable the second smart power stage to send a second temperature to the voltage regulator controller during a second phase.
