Methods and systems for optimizing timing for drilling and tripping operation. An example method may include receiving a plurality of sensor data characterizing rig equipment and tripping status. The method may include identifying a plurality of multi-thread rig states based on the plurality of sensor data. The method calculates a plurality of optimal rig state characteristics (RSCs), wherein the plurality of optimal RSCs are calculated based on the plurality of sensor data as it relates to the plurality of multi-thread rig states. The method also performs a tripping operation with the rig equipment after applying the plurality of optimal RSCs. The method may also gather a plurality of updated sensor data from the rig equipment during the tripping operation for a recalculation of the plurality of optimal RSCs.

A multi-layer friction reducing tape, including: a foil layer including a metal, polymer, or hybrid-metal-polymer; an under layer disposed on the foil layer; an adhesion promoting layer contiguous with a surface of the under layer; a functional layer that includes a fullerene based composite, a diamond based material, diamond-like-carbon (DLC), or combinations thereof, wherein the functional layer is contiguous with a surface of the adhesion promoting layer; and a tape, including an adhesive layer and a backing material, wherein the adhesive layer is attached to a surface of the foil layer opposite the under layer.

A method of moving a string assembly within a wellbore is disclosed. In some embodiments, the method comprises moving the string assembly within the wellbore; obtaining surface data regarding at least one parameter associated with moving the string assembly within the wellbore over a range of depths; modeling the at least one parameter over the range of depths for a plurality of assumed friction factors to obtain modeled data for each assumed friction factor; calculating a derivative of the surface data over the range of depths; calculating a derivative of the modeled data over the range of depths; comparing the derivative of the surface data to the derivative of the modeled data; determining one or more local friction factors for the range of depths based on the comparison; and adjusting at least one string assembly operating parameter based on the one or more local friction factors.

Method of operating a tubular string assembly within a wellbore

A method of optimizing drilling ramp-up is provided herein. More specifically, a method of ramping up a drilling operation from a static condition (0, 0) to optimum drilling parameter values (WOB*, RPM*) is provided. The method includes identifying a set of drilling control variables used in forming the wellbore. Examples include weight-on-bit (WOB) and rate of penetration (RPM). The method additionally includes selecting desired control variable values for a first identified drilling stage. The values may be generically referred to as (V, V). The method also includes increasing the drilling control variables from (0, 0) to pre-defined drilling control variable values (V, V). Preferably, Vis a WOB value while Vis a rotation speed value (RPM). The method also comprises monitoring a performance index (PI), wherein (PI) is a combination of torque (TQ) and penetration rate (RPM). The method then includes determining an optimal path to optimum drilling parameter values (WOB*, RPM*) using the Performance Index (PI).

Method of optimizing drilling ramp-up

Methods for drilling a wellbore within a subsurface region and drilling assemblies and systems that include and/or utilize the methods are disclosed herein. The methods include receiving a plurality of drilling performance indicator maps, normalizing the plurality of drilling performance indicator maps to generate a plurality of normalized maps, adaptive trending of the plurality of drilling performance indicator maps to generate a plurality of trended maps, summing the plurality of trended maps to generate an objective map, selecting a desired operating regime from the objective map, and adjusting at least one drilling operational parameter of a drilling rig based, at least in part, on the desired operating regime.

Methods for drilling a wellbore within a subsurface region and drilling assemblies that include and/or utilize the methods

Systems and methods for characterizing a spatial frequency of interface regions within a subterranean formation. A first method may include drilling a wellbore with a drilling assembly and measuring a downhole parameter during the drilling. The downhole parameter may be indicative of a lithology of a portion of the subterranean formation that is proximal to the drilling assembly. The first method also may include calculating an information entropy of the downhole parameter and characterizing the spatial frequency of the interface regions based upon the information entropy. A second method may include calculating the information entropy as a function of distance within a first wellbore and characterizing the spatial frequency of the interface regions. The second method also may include drilling a second wellbore within the subterranean formation and regulating the drilling based upon the spatial frequency of the interface regions. The systems include systems that perform the methods.

Systems and methods for characterizing a spatial frequency of interface regions within a subterranean formation

Methods and systems for controlling drilling operations include using a statistical model to identify at least two controllable drilling parameters having significant correlation to one or more drilling performance measurements. The methods and systems further generate operational recommendations for at least two controllable drilling parameters based at least in part on the statistical model. The operational recommendations are selected to optimize one or more drilling performance measurements.

Automatic drilling advisory system based on correlation model and windowed principal component analysis

Integrated methods and systems for optimizing drilling related operations include recording data, parsing the data into intervals and analyzing the intervals to determine if the performance data in each time interval is of sufficient quality for using the interval data in a performance optimization process. The quality assessment may involve evaluating the data against a set of determined standards or ranges. The performance optimization process may utilize data mapping and/or modeling to make performance optimization process recommendations.

Drilling advisory systems and methods to filter data

Combined methods and systems for optimizing drilling related operations include global search engines and local search engines to find the optimal value for at least one controllable drilling parameter, and a data fusion module to combine or select the operational recommendations from global and local search engines. The operational recommendations are used to optimize the objective function, mitigate dysfunctions, and improve drilling efficiency.

Drilling advisory systems and methods with combined global search and local search methods

Integrated methods and systems for optimizing drilling related operations include global search engines and local search engines to find an optimal value for at least one controllable drilling parameter, and decision trees to select algorithms such as between learning mode algorithms and application mode algorithms for generating operational recommendations based on the results from global and local search engines. The operational recommendations are used to optimize the objective function, mitigate dysfunctions, and improve drilling efficiency.

Drilling advisory systems and methods with decision trees for learning and application modes

Method to estimate severity of downhole vibration for a drill tool assembly, including: identifying a dataset comprising selected drill tool assembly parameters; selecting a reference level of downhole vibration amplitude for the drill tool assembly; identifying a surface drilling parameter and calculating a reference surface vibration attribute for the selected reference level of downhole vibration amplitude; determining a surface parameter vibration attribute derived from at least one surface measurement or observation obtained in a drilling operation, the determined surface parameter vibration attribute corresponding to the identified surface drilling parameter; and estimating a downhole vibration severity indicator by evaluating the determined surface parameter vibration attribute with respect to the identified reference surface vibration attribute.

Methods to estimate downhole drilling vibration amplitude from surface measurement

Method to estimate severity of downhole vibration for a wellbore drill tool assembly, comprising: identifying a dataset comprising selected drill tool assembly parameters; selecting a reference downhole vibration index for the drill tool assembly; identifying a surface parameter and calculating a reference surface vibration attribute for the selected reference downhole vibration index; determining a surface vibration attribute derived from at least one surface measurement or observation obtained in a drilling operation, the determined surface vibration attribute corresponding to the identified surface parameter; and estimating a downhole vibration index by evaluating the determined surface vibration attribute with respect to the identified reference surface vibration attribute.

Methods to estimate downhole drilling vibration indices from surface measurement

A method and apparatus associated with the production of hydrocarbons is disclosed. The method, which relates to modeling and operation of drilling equipment, includes constructing one or more surrogates for at least a portion of a bottom hole assembly (BHA) and calculating performance results from each of the one or more surrogates. The calculated results of the modeling may include one or more vibration performance indices that characterize the BHA vibration performance of the surrogates for operating parameters and boundary conditions, which may be substantially the same as conditions to be used, being used, or previously used in drilling operations. The selected BHA surrogate may then be utilized in a well construction operation and thus associated with the production of hydrocarbons.
