A fuse of the miniature or sub-miniature type with a housing of insulating material and having metal points of connection at, or in the vicinity of, two spaced ends thereof for connecting a fuse wire, and a fuse wire secured to the points of connection and stretched between them within the housing. According to the invention, at least one ridge or wall of insulating material is provided between the two points of connection in the housing so that each of the points of connection is, as it were, situated in a separate chamber. The fuse extends across the ridge and makes an angle at the passage across the ridge.

A method of attaching a lead to a metal end cap of an otherwise complete miniature-type safety fuse having a fuse element secured to the interior of said end caps by connecting means, is characterized in that the attaching is effected by a soldering operation which comprises holding one end of said lead against said end cap, wherein the region where attachment is to take place there is a given amount of solder, and supplying to said region a metered amount of energy in the form of one or more energy pulses producing over a given period enough total energy to melt said quantity of solder, but of insufficient total energy to penetrate through said end cap and adversely affect the bonding of said fuse element thereto.

Method of attaching a lead to a metal end cap of a safety fuse

The high current interrupting fuse of the invention includes an envelope free of sand or similar arc quenching material. The envelope preferably has terminal end caps enclosing the ends of the envelope between which caps a fuse element extends. The envelope has an arc-quenching gas-releasing material at least at the inner surface of the envelope. Arc barrier plugs made of an ablative material surround each end of the fuse element which for ease of assembly freely pass through bores of plugs. The fuse element also preferably passes through metal plates externally of the plugs and adjacent to the end caps.
