A color television Y/U/V luminance-chrominance multiplex signal with signals which may or may not be compressed in time comprises for a television line the associated luminance information Y and half the chrominance information U or V. As a result the circuit should supply the chrominance information directly (U, V) and repeatedly (U', V') during a subsequent television line. To avoid the use of an accurate, expensive delay device having a line period delay, the circuit includes an input shift register (A) of the series-in, parallel-out type, which is coupled through an on-off switch circuit (B1, B2) to parallel inputs of two shift registers (C1, C2) of the parallel-in, series-out type. During a line blanking period (THB) writing is effected from the input shift register in the output shift registers and during two subsequent line scan periods (THS1, THS2) reading is effected consecutively therefrom. Reading may be effected in opposite phase if a repetition is to be effected after exactly one line period.

Circuit for converting a colour television time division multiplex

A television system with enhanced definition in the field scanning direction is presented. In the information transmitter a video signal source is coupled directly and via line delay device with a subtraction circuit followed by a modulator with a subcarrier. An adding circuit is coupled with the output of the modulator and the source, possibly via the delay device. The resultant difference information is transmitted frequency-interleaved with the video information under control of a movement detector, to the information receiver. The receiver contains a filter circuit for separating the information. The modulated subcarrier goes via a demodulator to a superposition circuit to which further the video information is also supplied. The output of the superposition circuit is connected via a line delay device to one input of a switch-over circuit. The video information is supplied to a second input of the switch-over circuit. The supplied information on said first and second inputs is passed on by the switch-over circuit during alternate line periods. The result is an improvement of picture definition upon display in the field scanning direction.

Television system with improved definition in field scanning direction

Color television transmission and data storage system, respectively, with time-division multiplex encoding. A signal source is coupled via an encoding circuit for time-division multiplex encoding and signal compression to a transmission and storage channel, respectively to which a data receiver having a complementary decoding circuit is connectable. Luminance information associated with a number of p line periods is transmitted substantially non-compressed. A portion of the chrominance information associated therewith is transmitted in considerably compressed form in a number of q further line periods. In this situation there is an average chrominance time compression factor which is substantially equal to or less than q/p. On display, p lines are displayed with substantially the full bandwidth for the luminance and a limited chrominance bandwidth which is inherent to the time compression. The channel is then used optimally to obtain a high picture quality on display.

Color television transmission and data storage system, respectively with

In a television transmission system, an encoding circuit in a data generator transmits (or stores) identification information relating to variable numbers of television lines or variable portions of television lines in which luminance and chrominance information occur, compressed where appropriate. The data receiver includes a simple, properly adaptable decoding circuit which comprises presettable counters for counting portions of television lines and for counting television lines, outputs of these counters being coupled to address inputs of a programmable memory which is coupled to a multiplexer which is switchable by the identification information and is followed by a logic circuit for generating control signals for a chrominance memory having the same write and read rates and for luminance and chrominance memories having said write rates and several read rates, under the control of a clock pulse source which is switchable via the logic circuit and the identification information. In the data generator the encoding circuit may be of a similar construction combined with luminance and chrominance memories having different write rates and the read rate mentioned in the foregoing.

Color television transmission or data storage system with time division

A picture flicker correction is desired with video disc players involving display of a stop-motion or still television picture and with television displays using field and line frequency doubling, in accordance with the so-called ABAB method. With a movement detector (51) movement or the absence of movement is detected. Two adding circuits (19, 22) are connected in parallel to delay devices (9, 9+12) having time delays substantially equal to a field period. By means of two switch-over devices (32, 37) switched by the movement detector (51), the delay devices (9, 9+12) or the adding circuits (19, 22) can be coupled with a switch-over device (45) which is switched once per field period. A further delay device (42) having a time delay substantially equal to a field period provides for information transfer during second field periods of frame periods comprising two field periods. In the absence of movement detection, the original information is transferred, and in the event of movement detection, the combined information is transferred.

Television circuit for picture flicker correction

The television circuit is suitable for use with a television picture signal originating from a tele-cine converter (1) which operates at a cine film display rate of 24 frames per second and a 60 Hz field frequency. The picture signal has cycles of alternately two and three field periods with the same picture information which, on display, results in flicker phenomena. To reduce flicker on display of the picture signal on a display screen, the picture signal is applied directly and by a delay device (5) producing a time delay of at least two or more whole field periods to a signal combining circuit (6) which is in the form of a matrix circuit and is followed by a change-over circuit (7). The matrix circuit (6) produces signal combinations in the output picture signal which on display result in flicker reduction.

Television circuit for the reduction of flicker on a display

A television circuit arrangement for determining in a video signal (VS), frame periods comprising two field periods when a picture signal repeated in cycles of two successive field periods and with a possible change of picture content therebetween is present. Signal sources, such as, for example, cine-film television converters and 'field skip' signal storage- and display devices, supply such a signal. It may be required for signal processing operations improving the picture quality during display, to use the cycles as frame periods. For this purpose, the circuit arrangement is provided with a switching circuit (S1-S6), a first (C1,S1,S4) and a second signal integration circuit (C2,S2,S5) which can be reset and are alternately operative every other field period, and a succeeding signal comparison circuit (AMP,S6) for supplying a voltage (VV) determining the frame period.

Television circuit arrangement for determining in a video signal frame

A high definition color television transmission system in which wide band luminance information (Y, FIG. 1) is divided to produce a first luminance information portion (below 3.8 MHz) and a second luminance information portion (between 3.8 and 8.8 MHz). The first luminance information portion (Y1, FIG. 2) is transmitted by way of a first transmission path together with a color subcarrier (f.sub.sc) modulated by color information. The bandwidth of the color information is such that the modulation components lie outside the bandwidth of the first luminance information portion. The second and higher frequency luminance information portion is frequency shifted to lie within 0 and 5 MHz (Y2, FIG. 3) and is transmitted by way of a second transmission path. The two transmissions may also carry sound signals (f.sub.S1, FIG. 2; f.sub.S2, FIG. 3). The two transmissions may be jointly received for the provision of a high definition display but the invention has the distinct advantage that the signal of the first transmission path may be received alone by currently manufactured television receivers for reproduction of a display of a quality which is currently acceptable.

Television transmission system

A compatible television system for high-definition and for standardized low-definition television. In a transmitter (1) in the system, a high-definition video signal (VS1) is generated which is split into a contour signal (HVC2) which on display shows details in the horizontal and vertical directions, and a low-definition video signal (VS6). The low-definition video signal (VS6) is converted into a low-definition video signal (VS7) in conformity with the standard. The contour signal (HVC2) is also converted, but is transmitted periodically over several picture periods (HVC3). Both these converted signals are transmitted or stored, respectively, in two separate signal channels (3,4), each suitable for standard low-definition television. In a receiver (2) the standard video signal (VS7) can be utilized directly for low-definition display by a standard display device (8). In addition, a receiver (2) comprises a high-definition display device (7) in which the converted signals are reconverted and, after having been combined (48) result in a high definition video signal suitable for high-definition display by a picture display apparatus (49 ). As high-definition in the region of movement in the picture may disturb the picture quality, the contour signal may be locally suppressed on display.

Television system for high-definition television and a television

A television pick-up arrangement comprising a solid-state picture pick-up device rows of picture pick-up elements of which are connectable to parallel inputs of two output shift registers. When the shift registers are read simultaneously they supply at their series outputs picture signal which are associated with each time two pairs of rows of picture pick-up elements. According to the invention, the two picture signals are applied on the one hand separately to a vertical aperture correction circuit having only one delay device with a time delay of one line period and on the other hand combined to a horizontal aperture correction circuit, the corrected signals being combined behind said correction circuits. Advantageous use can then be made of a device in which pick-up information is obtained by both holes and electrons which are caused by photons.

Television pick-up arrangement comprising a solid-state picture pickup

A television pick-up arrangement comprising a solid-state picture pick-up device rows of picture pick-up elements of which are connectable to parallel inputs of two output shift registers. At a simultaneous read-out of the shift registers the registers supply at the series outputs picture signals associated with each pair of adjacent rows of picture pick-up elements. In the device the picture pick-up elements in one row are shifted in the row direction to the intermediate position relative to the elements in the other row. A color strip filter is provided having color filter strips transverse of the row direction which have a width equal to half the size in the row direction of a picture pick-up element. After the picture signal obtained from the registers are combined with the same polarity they are applied directly and via delay devices to inputs of a matrix circuit outputs of which are coupled to a change-over circuit from which color signals are obtained. Advantageous use can be made of a device in which pick-up information is obtained by use of both holes and electrons produced by photons.

Television pick-up arrangement comprising a solid state picture pick-up

An imaging panel comprising a buffer register inputs of which are connectable to the outputs of one of the rows or elements or connectable one after the other to outputs of several rows of the elements and whose outputs are coupled to the panel output. The buffer register is connected to a control circuit for shifting in each first field period of the interlaced picture each recorded information of an element row directly and fully, and for shifting in each second field period of the interlaced picture half of each recorded information of an element row, the other half being retained in the buffer register for confining it to half of the information to be shifted of the next row of elements.

Television imaging panel

A black-white or color television camera comprising a pick-up tube, provided with a signal electrode composed of separated strips. Prior to a line scan to be performed by an electron beam, the signal electrode strips are connected to a reference potential. After a scan the strips are through-connected successively through associated switches for supplying information. The switch outputs are alternatingly, in at least two groups through-connected and connected to at least two output leads. Always two stitches, which are connected to two adjacent strips are closed simultaneously. In this way it is avoided that a capacitive voltage distribution across the strips and switch inputs influence the picture signal obtained in a disturbing manner.

Television camera having signal electrode strips

When the information of a continuous-motion video record is displayed in the stop-motion mode by repeated display of two fields which form an interlaced picture, motion in the scene gives rise to a frame-frequency flicker phenomenon in the stop-motion picture. By forming suitable video signal combinations in discrete groups which each comprise two associated fields and by recording these combinations in the video record, the flicker phenomenon in a stop-motion picture is eliminated without continuous display being perceptibly affected.

Method of, and apparatus for, manufacturing a video record

A black-white or color television camera has a pick-up tube having a signal electrode comprising separate strips. Before a line scanning operation to be performed by an electron beam takes place, the signal electrode strips are coupled to a reference potential. After the line scan, the strips which are coupled separately to parallel inputs of a switching circuit which is provided with switches coupled to the parallel inputs, are coupled for supplying video information. This results in a separation between electron beam scanning and picture signal supply by the pick-up tube, which has the advantage that the beam scanning does not affect the picture quality in the direction of line scan. Furthermore, the construction with strips yield an improved signal-to-noise ratio. The switching circuit may, possibly together with a shift register, be integrated in a semiconductor body, which is provided near the signal electrode in the pick-up tube or outside the pick-tube.
