A milling tool includes a milling body and a plurality of insert-carrying cartridges mounted in the milling body. Each cartridge includes front and rear side surfaces which oppose leading and trailing walls of a pocket formed in the milling body. The cartridge also includes inner and outer flank surfaces which interconnect the front and rear side surfaces. The body includes a slot which opens into the front side surface at a location intermediate the ends of the cartridge, to divide the body into a rigid base portion and an expandable portion. The base portion has a seat for a cutting insert. A threaded hole is formed in the slot intermediate the slot ends to receive a threaded wedge screw. Tightening of the screw causes the expandable portion to be expanded into contact with the leading wall of the pocket and thereby push the base portion into tight contact with the trailing wall of the pocket. Accordingly, the cartridge is secured within the pocket by a tight frictional contact which resists chatter. The cartridge carries an adjusting screw to enable the cartridge to be adjusted in a direction along the axis of rotation of the milling body.

An indexable insert is located on a toolholder with reference to bearing surfaces on the insert and the toolholder which are proximate to the active cutting edge. These bearing surfaces are internal to the peripheral (side) flanks of the insert. Location of the insert in the toolholder is substantially independent of the relation between the toolholder pocket sidewalls and the peripheral flanks of the insert, thereby eliminating sources of error from insert manufacture and pocket manufacture. The insert and toolholder have locating units disposed thereon adapted to matingly engage each other when the insert is placed in the toolholder. At least one of the locator elements has a bearing surface or surfaces that extends through 360&deg; and resulting in less movement of the insert during use.

An insert for milling applications in which a radial rake face includes a concave conical portion defined to achieve constant positive radial rake throughout the length of a radial cutting edge at the angle of inclination thereof as the insert is intended to be mounted in a cutter body. The insert includes an axial rake face having a sloping portion defined to achieve positive axial rake as the insert is intended to be mounted in a cutter body. The upper surface of the insert includes planar regions and bend surfaces merging smoothly with the radial rake faces and axial rake faces to assist in chip expulsion during cutting.

A cutting tool includes a rotary bar having an arcuate pocket in its side surface, and a segmental carrier arcuately slidable in the pocket to adjust the position of a cutting tip on a cutter blade. The carrier has a second arcuate pocket that slidably receives a segment-shaped shoe, such that the shoe can be arcuately adjusted to control or vary the back taper angle on the blade. The cutting blade is mounted flatwise on one face of the shoe, such that a corner tip on the blade projects beyond the profile of the rotary bar for use in reaming a hole in a workpiece. The adjustment axis of the shoe is coincident with the cutting tip on the reamer blade so that adjusting motions of the shoe do not disturb the position of the cutting tip achieved by arcuate adjustment of the carrier.

A differential drive for rotation of a central shaft correspoding in contrast to a conventional axially displaced drawbar. The invention employs a harmonic drive gear arrangement having a stationary axle and a servo motor driven rotary axle to produce zero differential out of the radial spline when the servo driven axle is stationary. Servo controllled displacement occurs through rotation of the servo driven axle with a substantial reduction with respect to rotation of the stationary axle, e.g., in the order of 97:1.

Clamping retention is entirely accomplished by means immediately adjacent the interface of the planar surfaces leaving the outer surfaces of the tool holder open and free of clamp actuating projections.
