A method of finishing an interior wall includes the steps of preparing a substrate of building panels including gypsum, cement or combinations thereof, the substrate having a surface, followed by applying a coating to the substrate, the coating having 1-30% by weight of a latex emulsion binder, 30-80% by weight calcium sulfate hemihydrate, up to about 8% by weight of a set inhibiting agent and 20-60% by weight water.

An acoustical plaster system features a base layer mixture and a finish layer mixture. The base layer mixture includes a first binder, a first thickener and a plurality of first particles, with the first particles being porous, lightweight, non-close packing particles having a first mean diameter. The finish layer mixture includes a powder latex binder, a second thickener and a plurality of second particles, with the second particles being porous, lightweight particles having a second diameter. The first mean diameter is larger than said second mean diameter.

Sag in ceiling tiles is reduced by the present coated ceiling tile and method which decreases sag in the coated ceiling tiles. Calcined gypsum and water are combined to form a coating which is applied to the back side of a base ceiling tile in a thin layer of about 100 micrometer to about 1000 micrometers. The coating optionally includes a set time modifier. This method makes a coated ceiling tile from a base ceiling tile having a front side and a back side opposing the front side. The coating is applied to the back side of the base ceiling tile, the coating comprising an interlocking matrix of calcium sulfate dihydrate. Optionally, remnants of the set time modifier are present within interstices in the gypsum matrix. The remnants of the set time molecule include ions, molecules, particles or combinations thereof.

An acoustical panel for forming a monolithic ceiling or wall, the panel extending across a rectangular area, and having a core made primarily of gypsum, the core being essentially coextensive with the panel area such that it has two opposed sides, each of an area substantially equal to the area of the panel, the core having a multitude of perforations extending generally between its sides, the perforations being distributed substantially uniformly across the full area of the core and being open at both sides of the core, the face side of the core being covered by a porous layer, the perforations being optionally restricted at a rear side of the core, the porous layer at the face side of the core being suitable for adherence of drywall joint compound and a water-based non-blocking paint.

At least one of these or other problems is reduced using a building material that is uniquely identifiable. A method of making an identifiable gypsum-based building product includes selecting a tagging material occurring naturally in a component of the building material and choosing a carrier substance having a high concentration of the tagging material. By selecting an amount of the carrier substance and adding it to the building material, a building product having a unique product characteristic is created. In a second embodiment of the invention, a second tagging material is combined with the first tagging material to create a unique product. In yet another embodiment of the invention, a supplemental amount of the tagging material is added to the gypsum-based composition in addition to the carrier substance. Some tagging materials are useful in a gypsum-based composition to produce a visual confirmation of the presence of the tagging material.

Non-hydrating plaster composition and method

The present invention relates to a method for producing three-dimensional plaster objects via thin layer deposition. The inventive method comprises steps of depositing a layer of a calcium sulfate hemihydrate slurry onto the surface of a support in a predetermined pattern and activating the slurry with an activating agent so as to accelerate the setting reaction of calcium sulfate hemihydrate and water to form set calcium sulfate dihydrate. The depositing and activating steps can be repeated as necessary until the desired three-dimensional plaster object is formed.

Method for preparing three-dimensional plaster objects

A method of installing an acoustical system that provides a desired sound attenuation includes attaching an acoustical panel having a first density, a first porosity and a first void volume to the substrate. A first finishing layer is prepared with first particles, a first binder, a first rheological modifier and water which are combined, applied to the substrate and dried. The first finishing layer has a first density. When the first sound attenuation changes to a second sound attenuation a second finishing layer is prepared to include second particles, a second binder, a second rheological modifier and water. The dried second finishing layer has a second density. If the second density is less than the first density, the second sound attenuation is greater than the first sound attenuation. If the second density is greater than the first density, the second sound attenuation is less than the first sound attenuation.
