A self-priming injection site having a stopper that resists dislocation or removal from the injection site. The stopper is positioned within the plastic housing between a top with an open center and an intermediate ledge having an upturned lip. The stopper includes an annular groove that receives the upturned lip of the intermediate ledge, to assist in holding the stopper in compression within the housing. An arm portion allows the intravenous fluid to enter the injection site on a path approximately parallel to and immediately adjacent to the ledge and the bottom of the stopper. A check valve may be positioned within the arm portion.

A secondary lock for preventing separation of a pair of connected tubular members comprises an elongated body which carries a toothed rack. A first transversely extending retention member is carried adjacent one end of the body, with a sliding member slidably mounted on the body for longitudinal movement therealong. The sliding member carries a second transversely extending retention member. Each of the retention members are proportioned to grip and retain one of the tubular members. A pawl is provided for engaging the rack to permit the sliding member to be moved toward the first member but not away from the first member. However, the pawl is disengageable to permit the sliding member to be moved away from the first member when desired.

A flow regulating device and specifically an improved roller clamp with a length of conduit exhibiting low compression set properties disposed therein. The clamp includes an elongated box-like body having a fluid inlet at one end with a fluid outlet at the opposite end which are joined by the conduit to provide a flow lumen through the clamp. The roller is captured within a track in the body to selectively compress or release the conduit towards or away from a compression surface disposed at an angular variance to the track. The flow rate is regulated by appropriately positioning the roller. The conduit is captured within the body so as to be unaffected by external pulling or tugging forces.

A sleeve valve is carried in a parenteral solution administration device. The valve comprises an outer housing (30) defining an outlet tube (28); an inner tubular support (38) defining an inlet tube (45) and a closed forward end positioned within the outlet tube. Lateral aperture means (46) are provided in the tubular support, and an elastic tube (40) surrounds the inner tubular support to cover the lateral apertures. The inner tubular support is free of elastic, tube-retaining structures at its closed end, and is adapted to permit the elastic tube to be laterally slidable on the inner, tubular support through a limited distance. The outer housing defines vanes (44) to limit the lateral advancement of the elastic tube on the support, while shoulder means (42) are positioned about the support to limit the lateral retraction of the elastic tube away from the closed end. Accordingly, pressurized fluid flow though the inlet tube causes expansion of the elastic tube by pressure to permit fluid flow between the tube and tubular support out of both ends of the elastic tube. The valve can have higher flow rates at lower pressures, while at the same time having a lower residual volume.

An internally threaded dispensing closure for an externally threaded pharmaceutical container having a pour lip. The top surface of the closure defines a first opening surrounded by an upwardly extending port having a membrane therewithin. The spike of an administration set or the like may be inserted into the port to pierce the membrane. The top surface of the closure also defines a second opening having a hydrophobic filter communicating with the air above the top portion and also below the top portion. A gasket is carried by the underside of the top portion for sealing engagement with the pour lip of the container.

Valving configurations between the valve seat in a cassette and the valve members in a controller used to limit the flow rate of an intravenous solution to a patient. The configurations minimize the criticality of the alignment between the components. The cassette forms part of the flow path of the solution on its way to the recipient. The controller's valve member may stretch a membrane in the cassette and cause it to contact a flat surface surrounding the opening through which the fluid must flow. Alternately, the end of the valve member may be appreciably smaller than the opening, pass through it, and stretch the membrane until the latter contacts all of the opening's edge. The membrane meeting the edge of the opening in a closed loop prevents the flow of fluid through it. As a further possibility, the valve member may place the membrane in contact with one or more edges provided between two segments of a straight channel through which the solution flows.

Noncritically aligned valving devices for flow rate-limiting cassettes

A container closure is provided with internal threads which compensate for variations in the external threads of a container neck onto which the container closure is to be threaded. The container closure threads extend inwardly toward the central axis of the closure and, in the illustrative embodiment, define an angle of 30 degrees with respect to the central axis. The closure thread tapers inwardly as it extends toward the central axis and is generally flexible but is sufficiently rigid to prevent the lower thread from contacting an immediately higher thread during flexing of the threads.

A casette employing a stretchable elastomeric membrane used with an intravenous infusion controller to limit the field flow to a patient. The casette includes two sections of rigid plastic fused together with the membrane between them. The membrane and one section of the plastic form the channel through which the intravenous solution passes. The other section of plastic limits the expansion of the membrane to a predetermined size in order to provide the casette with a chamber of known volume. A valving configuration in the inlet and outlet to the chamber controls the fluid flowing through the casette and, thus, to the patient. Each valve includes a section of the elastomeric membrane in proximity to a configured portion of the piece of plastic forming the channel with the membrane. To close the valve, the controller extends a shaped elongated member through the other section of plastic to stretch the membrane and force it into contact with the configured plastic. Alternately opening and closing the inlet and the outlet ports at appropriate time intervals limit the fluid that can pass through the casette. The plastic forming the chamber with the membrane may also include a groove to allow the passage of fluid through the casette when outside the controller. Small circular grooves allow for the removal of air bubbles in the chamber when first priming it for use with the intravenous solution.

A tubular sealing member defines a bore having an open mouth, plus several spaced, annular sealing members in the bore to grip and seal a tubular projection. In accordance with this invention, at least some of the spaced, annular sealing rings define, in cross section, flexible elongated projections which, in turn, define longitudinal axes which incline toward the open mouth in acute angle relationship to the axis of the bore. The longitudinal axes of the projections are at least 0.01 inch long. The average thickness of each of the flexible projections is less than the length of its longitudinal axis.
