A computer-implemented method includes initiating a copy request for a data storage cartridge. The data storage cartridge includes data storage media having host data thereon. The method also includes transparently loading the data storage cartridge into a first data storage drive of a data storage library and establishing drive-to-drive communication for copying data from the data storage media in the first data storage drive to data storage media in a second data storage drive. The method includes copying data from the data storage media in the first data storage drive to the data storage media in the second data storage drive. A system includes a processor and logic integrated with the processor, executable by the processor, or integrated with and executable by the processor. The logic is configured to perform the foregoing method.

Transparent drive-to-drive copying

A method includes receiving a humidity level in a tape library and determining whether the humidity level is in a predefined range indicative of safe operation. In response to determining that the humidity level is in the predefined range, the method includes allowing performance of operations on magnetic recording tapes. In response to determining that the humidity level is not in the predefined range, the method includes preventing performance of the operations on magnetic recording tapes. A drive-implemented method includes detecting a humidity level within a housing of a tape drive and determining whether the humidity level is in a predefined range indicative of safe operation.

Adaptive tape library and humidity-based drive operations

A computer-implemented method according to one embodiment includes receiving, at a peripheral device via an in-band interface, a predetermined command; determining, by the peripheral device, a predetermined identifier within the predetermined command; and implementing, by the peripheral device, parameter data associated with the predetermined identifier, in response to the determining.

Implementing management commands utilizing an in-band interface

A system and method of combining move commands of an automated data storage library is disclosed that includes receiving a first command from a host system to remove a first data storage cartridge from a data storage drive of the automated data storage library; maintaining the first data storage cartridge within the data storage drive until receiving a second command from the host system to move a second data storage cartridge into the data storage drive; responding to the host system with a successful move completion status of the first data storage cartridge from the data storage drive, even though the first data storage cartridge is maintained within the data storage drive; and updating a cartridge inventory for the host system to indicate that the first data storage cartridge is located in a requested storage slot location after receiving the first command from the host system to remove the first data storage cartridge from the data storage drive, even though the first data storage cartridge is maintained within the data storage drive.

Combining of move commands to improve the performance of an automated data storage library

A computer-implemented method includes instructing performance of a data operation on a magnetic recording tape using a primary drive, wherein the primary drive rewinds the magnetic recording tape onto a spool at a first tension. The method also includes instructing transfer of the magnetic recording tape to a rewinder drive after performance of the data operation and instructing the rewinder drive to perform a low-tension rewind operation. The low-tension rewind operation includes unspooling the magnetic recording tape from the spool and rewinding the magnetic recording tape onto the spool at a second tension lower than the first tension.
