A self-organizing network of nodes communicates with uncollimated optical pulses. The nodes use low-power, unmoving, broad-beam optical interfaces, low-power processors, and communication algorithms based on timeslots within a timeframe. Nodes self-organize to form the network by pulsing detectors and sources to find neighboring nodes, confirm connections, transmit and store data, and exchange partner node identities. Two- or three-dimensional networks can thereby self-organize without external awareness of network topology, and can repair themselves when nodes move or fail. Node communication may be synchronous, thereby allowing for images of the environment status, and activation of the environment is possible via node stimulators. After forming a network, a cluster of nodes may be read out to provide data from node sensors. Implementation of selected features in the nodes' processors enable formation of networks that are unidirectional, bidirectional, serial, or complex including the formation of meshed networks with adjustable link weights capable of computation.

Miniature embedded self-organized optical network

A method of immersing an electrode in an electroplating solution while under vacuum, to substantially eliminate air and/or other gas from microscopic holes, cavities or indentations in the electrode. A method of electroplating an electrode in an electroplating solution including the application of a vacuum to the electrode while it is immersed in the electroplating solution to thereby substantially eliminate air and/or other gas from microscopic holes, cavities or indentations in the electrode. The electroplating liquid may be applied to only one side of the electrode ('the wet side') in which case, sufficient time is allowed to pass for the immersion liquid to fill the microscopic through-holes, cavities or indentations in the electrode. An enhancement of this mode is to force liquid through the microscopic holes from the wet side. A highly penetrating solvent may be used as an immersion liquid. Alternatively, carbon dioxide can be used as an immersion liquid, in which case the liquid carbon dioxide may be obtained by adjusting the temperature and pressure conditions in a closed container of gaseous carbon dioxide.

Preparing electrodes for electroplating

A method and an apparatus to drive an analog signal into a sensory tissue. The apparatus includes an analog-to-digital converter converting an original analog signal to a digital signal at an analog-to-digital converter sample rate. The apparatus includes a digital transceiver communicating wirelessly with the analog-to-digital converter to receive the digital signal. The apparatus includes a digital data buffer receiving the digital signal from the digital transceiver. The apparatus includes a digital-to-analog converter communicating with the digital data buffer and converting the digital signal into a reconstructed analog signal at a digital-to-analog converter sample rate faster than the analog-to-digital converter sample rate, the analog signal comprising a plurality of intensity values. The apparatus includes a pixel clock matching the digital-to-analog converter sample rate. The apparatus includes a bio-interface array comprising a plurality of electrodes and operably proximate to the sensory tissue.

Wireless bio-interface data transmission system

The electroporation array is comprised of three technologies: microwire glass electrodes, microelectronic multiplexer stimulator chips and microfluidic flow chamber. Various substances, such as genes, gene silencing RNAi, gene inhibition agents or drugs, can be perfused into the microfluidic flow chamber. The entry of the various substances into the cells will be facilitated by electroporation. An applied electric potential causes nanoscale pores to open in the cell membrane allowing substances in the solution to freely diffuse into the cell. The specific cells selected for electroporation are defined using the computer controlled microelectronic stimulator array. An 'image' of which electrodes within the array to apply the electric potential to, and thus electroporate, is de-multiplexed onto the array. All the selected electrodes deliver a current pulse varied by the intensity of the de-multiplexed 'image'. By serially perfusing different substances across the cells or tissue and electroporating different areas of the cell or tissue culture, it will be possible to have different cells within the culture contain different genes, gene silencing RNAi, gene inhibition agents, drugs, chemicals or other substances or sets thereof. It is also possible to re-electroporate subsets of cells on the array to allow for multiple gene combinations. In essence, this invention allows for the creation of cell arrays and would be analogous to gene arrays, which have been so important in recent advances in biotechnology, such as the human genome project.

Microelectronic cell electroporation array

A target discriminating antipersonnel/antimaterial cluster weapon capable distinguishing between hard and soft targets. Upon striking a hard target such as armor or concrete, shear rivets are defeated causing a striker to plunge a firing pin into a stab detonator which through an explosive transfer train causes immediate detonation of the bomblet. Upon hitting a soft target such as sandy soil, the shear rivets will not be sheared, however, an inertia firing weight plunges a firing pin assembly into a stab primer which leads to a propellant charge causing the bomblet to pop back up into the air. The bomblet then is detonated through a pyrotechnic delay in the air. The bomblet is armed during its descent via a flutter plate giving oscillatory motion which is transferred into rotary motion. The rotary motion is employed to align the primer and detonator with the firing pins.
