System and method for providing a layer 2 switch in the access network that switches based upon one or more carrier tags identifying customer traffic. Customer traffic conforming to any variety of different layer 1 or layer 2 protocols may be encapsulated and identified according to carrier tag values. The layer 2 switch may determine how to handle the traffic by interpreting and manipulating the carrier tag values. The layer 2 switch may be capable of switching TDM input traffic to either TDM or packet output traffic, and switching packetized input traffic to either TDM or packet output traffic. Handling classification values may also be processed by the layer 2 switch to affect prioritization of handling of encapsulated traffic.

In a telecommunications network provisioned with different types of restoration processes, to ensure that the operation of one restoration process does not infringe upon other nodes that are actively executing a different restoration process, a request is sent by one of the restoration processes, under the guise of the operation system that oversees that process, to the operation system that oversees the other restoration process. The controller of the nodes that are performing the other restoration process, in receipt of the request, sends a disable restoration process message to those nodes under its control. Each of those nodes, upon receipt of the disable restoration process message, would disable the restoration process it is provisioned with so long as it is not actively engaging in that restoration process. If it is, it will continue to execute that restoration process until a safe stop point is reached, at which time it ceases that restoration process. Upon cessation of the particular restoration process, the node sends an acknowledge message to its controller, which, when in receipt of such acknowledge message from all of the nodes under its control, sends a disable acknowledged message to the controller of the first restoration process informing the latter that the nodes under its control can now be operated using the first restoration process. The above method is applicable to a telecommunications network provisioned with multiple layers of restoration processes including for example DRA, RTR and centralized restoration.

Method of coordinating the respective operations of different restoration processes

To ensure the integrity of a telecommunications network provisioned with a distributed restoration algorithm (DRA), a communications network is provided for routing signaling messages such as DRA restoration and maintenance messages among the various nodes of the network. Thus, while data is sent among the nodes via the working links interconnecting the various nodes, signal messages are communicated among the various nodes by way of the independent communications network, which may be a wide area network. By reallocating the signal messages to a separate network, an efficient telecommunications network is effected.

In a distributed restoration environment, a node, upon detecting an alarm indicating a failure, after a predetermined period of time, converts the received alarm signal into a modified alarm signal and transmits the thus converted signal to the node adjacent thereto that should have received the same alarm signal to thereby effectively force the failure to be bidirectional if the original failure were a unidirectional failure. The converted signal is sent only after a predetermined period of time has passed to ensure that the failure detected indeed is an actual failure.

Method and system of managing unidirectional failures in a distributed restoration network

In a telecommunications network provisioned with a distributed restoration algorithm, the spare links via which disrupted traffic may be rerouted are categorized into different quality levels based upon their respective anticipated near term availability and reliability. There are a number of categories ranging from dedicated high quality spare links along fully functional spans to low quality spare links that act as replacements for multiple working links in the same span as the failed working link.

To ensure that the distributed restoration process of a DRA provisioned network proceeds only in response to true failures, the present invention DRA network provisions to each of the ports of the nodes a timer mechanism for ascertaining whether an alarm is a genuine alarm. This is done by presetting the timer with an expiration period so that an alarm is validated as a failure only upon the expiration of the timer. When validated, the value of a counter is incremented. The value of the counter is reflective of the sum of validated alarms, and is compared against a preset threshold value. And it is only when the value of the summed validated alarms exceeds the preset threshold value would the DRA process be initiated. When a validated alarm ceases, the reverse process takes place. That is, the ending of the alarm has to be validated by another timer, which could be the same timer as used for validating an alarm. The counter is decremented for each validated non-alarm, so that when the value of the defect counter falls below the threshold value, the DRA process is reset.
