Methods and systems are provided for operating a variable displacement engine that includes a knock control system. Engine background noise levels for detecting engine knock may be the basis for determining whether or not the engine is operating in a cylinder deactivation mode. Further, select variable engine displacement modes may be avoided so that engine background noise level changes may be reduced to improve engine knock detection.

Method and system for variable displacement engine knock control

Methods and systems for adjusting engine knock control system dynamic gains are presented. In one example, a plurality of tables or functions output gain values, each of which is adjusted via a unique weighting factor. A rectified and integrated engine knock sensor level is adjusted according to a sum of weighted gain output values of the plurality of tables or functions.

Methods and systems are provided for improving the detection and mitigation of high speed pre-ignition. In one example, high speed pre-ignition is detected based on concurrent or sequential changes in an integrated knock sensor output in a knock window as well as a pre-ignition window. The Universal Nutcracker is set of jaws with an increasing opening between top and bottom jaws to allow for cracking different diameter nuts connected by a set of linkages. Each jaw has a set of teeth for gripping the shell of the nut to be cracked. A torsion spring is connected between the top and bottom center lever to assist in opening the jaw set after the nut has been cracked. Ends of top and bottom center levers are then coupled to a scissoring arms with linkage assembly for opening and closing with a mechanical advantage.
