A wiper apparatus for a vehicle window has a wiper arm pivot rotatably mounted in a pivot holder fixedly securable to vehicle structure. An end portion of the wiper arm pivot normally extends exteriorly of an impact line defined by vehicle structure. The wiper arm pivot includes an inner pivot shaft telescopingly displacable with respect to an outer pivot shaft upon the imposition of an impact load on the exterior end of the wiper arm pivot. A first pin separably holds the inner pivot shaft to the outer pivot shaft at a first position. An energy absorption material mass is disposed between the inner pivot shaft and the outer pivot shaft to control the telescoping movement of the inner pivot shaft in the outer pivot shaft and to absorb impact forces acting on the inner pivot shaft. A second fixed pin is carried by the outer pivot shaft and limits movement of the inner pivot shaft to a second position adapted for temporary operation of the wiper apparatus.

A fluid heater apparatus and method of making same includes a low porosity material, thermally conductive mass. A heat source is disposed in the thermally conductive mass for imparting heat to the mass. Fluid in a flow path through the mass absorbs heat from the mass. The thermally conductive mass is molded, cast or extruded from a material which, with the selected forming process, provides a low porosity mass. The mass may be formed of ceramic, aluminum and poltruded carbon. The mass can be cast from a material which is introduced into the casting mold in a semi-solid temperature state.

A fluid heater apparatus supplies heat to wash fluid via a flow path in a thermally conductive body. A heat source is disposed in the thermally conductive body for imparting heat to the body. Fluid flowing through the thermally conductive body in a flow path enveloping the heat source to absorb heat from the body. A seal member and a metal plate are fixed to one surface of the thermal body. A high thermally conductive pad is disposed between a printed circuit board carrying a control with heat generating switch elements. The pad conducts heat generated by control switching elements to the plate to reduce the temperature differential between the plate and the thermally conductive body to balance the temperature of the heater apparatus.

A fluid heater apparatus supplies heat to wash fluid via a continuous, labyrinthian flow path in a thermally conductive body. A heat source is disposed in the thermally conductive body for imparting heat to the body. Fluid flowing through the thermally conductive body substantially envelopes the heat source to absorb heat from the body.

A vehicle exterior surface wash apparatus includes a source of pressurized fluid having a pump which is operable in one of two different outlet flow directions and/or one of two different outlet flow pressures. Distribution conduits extend from the pump to fluid nozzles for dispensing fluid over selected exterior surfaces. A valve is connected in each fluid distribution path to select one of the fluid paths for fluid flow depending upon the valve position. An optional heater may be interposed with the fluid distribution path to supply heated fluid to at least one of the exterior surfaces.

A method and apparatus for controlling fluid temperature in a fluid heater apparatus which supplies heat to fluid from a controllable heater element(s) which includes establishing a discharge temperature range between a first high temperature and a second low temperature. The temperature of the fluid is measured and, in response to the measured temperature, activation of the heater elements is controlled to maintain the temperature of the fluid within the temperature range. The heater elements can be independently controllable for temperature control.

A wiper apparatus for a vehicle windshield has a wiper arm pivot rotatably mounted in a pivot holder fixedly secured to vehicle structure. An end portion of the wiper arm pivot normally extends exteriorly of an impact line defined by surrounding vehicle structure. The wiper arm pivot is axially displayable relative to the pivot holder upon the imposition of an impact load on the exposed end of the wiper arm pivot. An axial displacement biasing member is coupled to the wiper arm pivot for normally biasing the wiper arm pivot to a normal wiper arm wiping position. The axial displacement member returns the wiper arm pivot to the nominal wiping position after the impact load causing axial displacement of the wiper arm pivot has been removed from the wiper arm pivot.

A fluid heater apparatus includes a thermally conductive mass formed of a stack of lamina, each having apertures for receiving heater element(s) therethrough and apertures which are alignable between opposed ends of the stack to form fluid flow paths. The lamina are rotatably offset from adjacent lamina in one step or groups of two or more steps to create helical flow paths in the throughbores.

A wet disc brake and axle fluid cooling assembly is disclosed which is driven by a vehicle's axle shaft. The system comprises a brake housing, an axle shaft connected to the brake housing wherein the brake fluid can flow between the brake housing and the axle housing, an internal pump connected to the axle housing, and an external cooling tube disposed between the internal pump and the brake housing. An axle shaft is rotatingly disposed within the axle housing. A first spur gear is connected to and rotates with the axle shaft. The internal pump is comprised of an axle straight tee fitting, a pump rod rotatingly connected to the tee fitting, a propeller connected to and rotating with the pump rod that draws the fluid from either the axle housing or the brake housing, and a second spur gear that engages with the first spur gear. The axle shaft drives the pump rod as the shaft rotates, either clockwise or counter-clockwise.

A stationary disc for use in a wet disc brake assembly includes a plurality of holes drilled through the disc. The holes change the mass of the disc, and thus change the frequency of the entire disc brake assembly. This portion of the invention is particularly useful to modify the frequency such that it is not approximately equal to the frequency of an associated stationary member. In addition, the holes may be plugged with a material that becomes viscous at expected operational temperatures of the brake. This is valuable to provide a vibration dampener, that inherently becomes actuated when the brake heats.

A disc pack for a wet disc brake assembly includes a plurality of rotating discs. The rotating discs adjacent the axial end of the disc pack are formed of a lower co-efficient of friction material than more centrally located discs. In this way, the wear across the disc pack is more uniform, and a greater load can be carried. In addition, in this way the centrally located discs provide greater braking work than they would if they had the same co-efficient of friction as the axially outermost discs. Applicant has determined that the axially outermost discs see greater force from the braking components, and thus would perform more work than the central discs given equal co-efficients of friction. In this way, the useful life of the disc pack is increased since more work is done by the central discs and wear is more uniform.
