The invention concerns a method of manufacturing an ophthalmic lens, comprising the steps of providing, mounting and blocking a substrate () on a machining support unit (), surfacing an upper face () of said substrate, edging a peripheral edge () of said substrate, wherein said machining support unit comprises a surfacing member () and an edging member () which are separable, said surfacing member having a cavity () in which said edging member is located during said step of surfacing, said surfacing and edging members being configured so that said substrate is mounted and blocked on said machining support unit in a first predetermined position for the surfacing and the edging and, between said steps of surfacing and edging, the method comprises the step of withdrawing said surfacing member from said machining support unit by retaining said substrate on said edging member.

A method of forming thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) into an optical lens. Suitable TPUs contain urethane (&#x2014;NHCOO&#x2014;) repeating units that are present in at least 23% by weight. This range of urethane weights is an indicator of a flexural modulus above 1,400 MPa. The TPUs have refractive indices above 1.54 and Abbe numbers above 27. They have glass transition temperatures above about 100 degrees C. The selected TPU can be injection molded to form ophthalmic lenses, that are well suited for use in rimless spectacles. The lenses are highly solvent resistant, while at the same time being readily tintable. The lenses made according the invention meet FDA 21 CFR 801.41 Impact Requirement, and ANSI Z87.1 high velocity impact (HVI) standard.

A lens has at least one insert (), which defines an optical path. For manufacturing the lens, the insert is first bonded to an overmould (). A polymer () is then moulded in a mould () formed on one of its faces from the overmould. After moulding, the overmould may be preserved and form part of the lens, if necessary after surface grinding. The overmould may also be separated from the lens; in this case, the lens is machined, removing at least part of the inserts. The lens obtained has an insert in a reproducible position, with an entrance or exit surface inducing no optical distortion.

A first preform having a first geometry is formed from the polymer base material sufficiently polymerized for the first preform to be self-supporting. A confinement space is defined between the first preform and an abutment member having facing it a second geometry at least partly different than the first geometry and having a greater volume than the latter. The first preform is brought into contact in the confinement space with a sufficient quantity of swelling agent for the swelling to which it is then subject to cause it to be urged actively into contact with all points of the second geometry. The resulting polymer material is polymerized and the second preform thus obtained is machined, if necessary, to the required final geometry of the required article.
