A system and method for network design are disclosed. In one embodiment of a method incorporating teachings of the present disclosure, embedded network information describing at least one existing network element and a plurality of physical locations available for locating new network nodes may be received. A demand forecast for a coverage area of a proposed network may also be received. In an embodiment in which a proposed network has a core layer, a number of core layer nodes to be included in the proposed network may also be received. In an embodiment in which a proposed network has an aggregation layer, a number of aggregator layer nodes to include in the proposed network may be calculated by adding a positive integer to a lower bound number of aggregator layer nodes. Consideration may be given to these and other inputs in connection with generating a network design.

System and method for network design

A method for automatically designing a switched metro Ethernet data is provided. During execution of the method, data network information, customer demand information, equipment information, and at least one design constraint is received. Based thereon, a potential topology design for the switched metro Ethernet data network is automatically established. The potential topology for the switched metro Ethernet data network can be a tree topology that is rooted at a predetermined hub node and that has a plurality of leaves. Each leaf is located at a customer location. In a particular embodiment, an aggregation node is placed at the hub node. Further, an aggregation node is placed at a predetermined redundant hub node. Additionally, an aggregation node is placed at another location in the tree topology.

System and method for designing a customized switched metro Ethernet data network

A system and method for imputing data into a database includes an imputing system operable to impute data based on outside plant construction principles. The imputing system includes an inventory database, a data engine, a search engine, and a loop engine. The inventory database includes a plurality of distribution records each associated with one or more cable pairs. The data engine determines if a desired distribution record corresponding to a desired cable pair includes missing data. The search engine searches a known class of serving terminals for complete distribution records and iteratively searches a sized binder group within the inventory database for one or more complete distribution records where the size of the binder group searched increases with each iterative search. The loop engine determines an imputed value for the desired distribution record based on the searching and imputes the value into the desired distribution record.

System and method for completing incomplete records in a database of twisted cable pair information

A system and method for Ethernet network design are disclosed. In one embodiment of a method incorporating teachings of the present disclosure, embedded network information describing at least one existing network element and a plurality of physical locations available for locating new network nodes may be inputted. A demand forecast for a coverage area of a proposed network may also be inputted. In an embodiment in which a to-be-designed network has at least a core layer and an aggregation layer, a number of core layer nodes and aggregator nodes to be included in the proposed network may also be inputted. Consideration may be given to these and other inputs in connection with generating a potential network design for the proposed network, and a cost of implementing the potential network design may be calculated.

System and method for ethernet network design

In a particular embodiment, a method of evaluating a network is disclosed. The method identifies potential failure points between a layer two asynchronous transfer mode network and a layer one Synchronous Optical Network (SONET) network. The method includes identifying a first set of circuit identifiers of inter-nodal links of a layer two asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) network, correlating a second set of circuit identifiers associated with elements of a layer one SONET network, identifying a subset of the first set of circuit identifiers of those inter-nodal links that are mated with each other, and comparing the subset of the first set of circuit identifiers to the second set of circuit identifiers to identify single point of failure elements including interface elements and add drop multiplexer elements.

System and method for imputing data into a database

One embodiment of the present invention provides a system that guarantees a stated failure-recovery time in an optical wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) network. The system operates by first receiving a request at an ingress node of the WDM network to establish a connection from a source to a destination through the WDM network, wherein the request includes the stated failure-recovery time. The system then calculates a chain of restorable cycles within the WDM network between the ingress node for the source and an egress node for the destination, wherein each cycle in the chain of restorable cycles can guarantee the stated failure-recovery time. Finally, the system selects a section of each restorable cycle to be a primary path between the source and the destination through the restorable cycle.
