A process for halogenating copolymers of an isoolefin having from 4 to 7 carbon atoms and a para-alkylstyrene in the melt phase is provided in which the halogenation reaction is performed in a continuous flow device, such as an extruder-reactor. The partially crosslinked polymer is produced by curing an uncrosslinked unsaturated polymer having a low level of chemically bound halogen with a curing agent which reacts only with the halogen.
