Organometallic compounds comprising a chloroquinoline moiety for use in the prophylaxis and treatment of malaria. The compounds can be manganese or rhenium complexes of a ligand comprising a chloroquinoline moiety.

Use of cymanquine compounds as antimalarial agents

Isolated proteins and nucleic acid sequence encoding such protein that interacts with a red blood cell to be invaded by a malaria parasite and link with a component of the actin-myosin based machinery of the malaria parasite are provided. In addition methods for identifying agents which inhibit the function of these proteins as chemotherapeutic and/or immunologic agents for treatment and prevention of malaria infections are provided. The invention also provides isolated nucleic acid molecules encoding the liver stagepolypeptides of the invention, compositions comprising one or more liver stagepolypeptides of the invention, methods for inducing an immune response against the liver stagepolypeptides, and methods for treating and diagnosing liver stage malaria.
