A system and process for refining raw sugar, comprising a melting unit configured to receive the raw sugar and an eluent to produce a melt liquor, a decolorization unit configured to receive the melt liquor and to produce a fine liquor, a crystallization unit configured to fractionate high-purity crystalline sucrose from the fine liquor and to provide a run-off syrup, a softening unit configured to receive the run-off syrup to produce a softened syrup, at least one separation unit configured to receive the softened syrup to produce a low-invert sucrose product, and a recycle line configured to relay the low-invert sucrose product from the at least one separation unit to the melting unit.

Method for the recovery of acids from hydrometallurgy process solutions

A method is described that relates to reducing amounts of regenerant waste or increasing the concentration of regenerant waste from ion exchange processes. A method is described that may allow a batch ion exchange process to compete on these factors with continuous or simulated continuous ion exchange processes, and/or to improve the efficiency in operation continuous or simulated continuous ion exchange processes. A specific application addressed is the treatment of water in the Coal Bed Methane Process.

Ion exchange process

The invention provides a method for recycling the waste regenerant from softeners. The method includes passing a high concentration of monovalent ionic halide salt through a resin bed. The high monovalent cation concentration causes the divalent cations on the resin to be exchanged with the monovalent cations by osmotic forces. The regenerant is then treated to precipitate the divalent cations and replace them with monovalent cations.

Regenerant reuse

Diffusion juice of a sugar plant is heated under stable sucrose conditions, notably alkaline pH, and held above 70.degree. C. for sufficient duration to effect significant agglomeration. The agglomerated particulates are removed by phase separation procedures, leaving a clarified juice containing a very low, typically 0.1-0.5 volume percent, solids load.
