A reorganization of genomic data into a simpler standard form leads to more transparent data analyses. The customary selection practice that focuses on high odds ratios loci is shown to be biased, reflecting quality of presently reported risk loci for T2D. A selection criterion, based on Shannon information theory, brings clarity to this issue and provides a rational and optimal basis for selecting potential risk loci. This is used to determine an optimal disease classifier. Within the framework of the FUSION database this leads to a relatively successful degree of T2D prediction and nearly an order of magnitude more effective in detecting T2D. Chromosome 7 is strongly associated with T2D. A hypothesis of this study is that the genomic disease signal is possibly weak, and instead of focusing on individual loci a collection of loci contribute to a composite Score, which functions as the determinant of disease or its absence.

Method for identifying and employing high risk genomic markers for the prediction of specific diseases

Submarines are provided with bluff-shaped surfaces and/or fins used for modification of tropical storms or hurricanes by mixing the upper layer of a section of a body of water with water from a lower section of the body of water. By coordinating a number of submarines to traverse a region of a tropical storm or ahead of a hurricane the cooled water reduces the amount of heat energy available to fuel the intensity and movement of storms. A perforated plate of approximately 100 m&#xd7;100 m is used, with or without fins, to mix layers of water by creating sufficient turbulence to create eddies up to 50 m. Submarines are used to entrain fluid motion to induce anti-cyclonic vorticity in the body of water.

System and method for decreasing the intensity and frequency of tropical storms or hurricanes

Modification of tropical storms or hurricanes by mixing the upper layer of a section of a body of water with water from a lower section of the body of water. Rapidly mixing the warmer upper layer with the cooler lower layer cools the surface of the water, thereby reducing the amount of heat energy available to fuel the intensity and movement of storms. By cooling selected sections of water, the frequency, intensity or direction of storms may be altered. In one embodiment of the invention, a bluff shaped object is attached to a submarine to facilitate rapid mixing of the upper and lower layers of the body of water.

Turbulence is controlled in boundary layer or wall-bounded fluid flow fields having a turbulent wall region characterized by a system of roll pairs extending in the direction of flow, and obliquely propagating structures interacting with the system of roll pairs, by locally introducing into the turbulent wall region two separate disturbances that are effective to produce, in a local region, a composite disturbance field that is strongly coupled to and modifies the obliquely propagating structures in a manner that increases or decreases the interaction of the propagating structures with the system of roll pairs thereby locally increasing or decreasing the turbulence in the flow field. One of the disturbances may result from the interaction of the fluid with a linear strip, or an array of strips, of delta-shaped protrusions positioned spanwise on the wall (i.e., transverse to the flow direction); and the second disturbance may result from injecting sonic energy into the local region. Furthermore, a linear strip or an array of airfoil shaped protrusions can be used for producing a pair of counter rotating rolls for controlling turbulence in the boundary layer.

Turbulence in a wall-bounded fluid flow field having a turbulent wall region characterized by a system of roll pairs extending in the direction of flow, and propagating structures interacting with the system of roll pairs, is controlled by introducing into the turbulent flow, a disturbance that changes the character of the propagating structures directed at an inclined angle to the direction of flow. Where the disturbance increases the amplitudes of the propagating structure, turbulent mixing or heating is increased; and when the disturbance decreases the amplitude of the propagating structure, the turbulent drag is decreased.
