A relief spring stop bolt assembly for shallow bowl coal pulverizing mills and a method of using the same to smooth operation of such a pulverizer during low load operation is described. The subject relief spring stop bolt assembly is sized to be used with or for 'retrofit' within existing journal space and existing journal opening cover space of a shallow bowl mill to effectively smooth rough operating conditions.

A pulverizerincludes a spring assemblythat urges a grinding rollerof a journal assemblyonto a grinding surfaceof a grinding table. The force applied is monitored by a load celllocated within spring assemblythat creates an electronic signal. A controllerreceives the electronic signal and stores and/or displays it and alternatively acts to adjust the applied force to a desired value. Alternatively, adjustable forces or mechanical dampening may be applied to journal assemblyby controller. Alternatively, additional sensors may measure displacement of the journal assembly and rotation of the grinding table for other calculations.

A method of extending the life of a journal bearing assembly in a solid fuel pulverizer includes: removing a first lower journal bearing from a journal shaft and a lower bearing seat of a lower bearing housing; removing a first upper journal bearing from the shaft and an upper bearing seat of an upper bearing housing; modifying the lower and upper bearing seats; modifying lower and upper shoulders on the journal shaft; disposing the second lower and upper journal bearings on the modified lower and upper bearing seats; disposing a new journal bearing spacer between the second lower and upper journal bearings; disposing a new journal bearing collar between the upper shoulder and the second upper journal bearing; filling a cavity defined by the lower and upper journal housings with grease; and disposing a seal assembly between the shaft and one end of the upper journal housing opposite the lower journal housing to prevent the ingress of solid fuel into the cavity of the journal assembly.

Method and apparatus for extended life journal assembly

A coil spring assembly for connection with a separator body to apply a spring force to a grinding roll of a journal assembly to pulverize solid fuel. The coil spring assembly includes: a preload stud having a first end in communication with the journal assembly and an exposed opposite second end extending from the coil spring assembly; a spring adjustment bolt and bearing assembly being fixed relative to the preload stud extending therethrough; and a seal being substantially cylindrical shaped and flexible at least along a central axis thereof. The seal has a first end operably secured to the spring adjustment bolt and bearing assembly and an opposite second end operably secured to the second end of the preload stud thereby sealing a bushing area corresponding to a portion of the preload stud surrounded by the spring adjustment bolt and bearing assembly from ground solid fuel dust and allowing movement of the preload stud at least along the central axis thereof to apply the spring force from the coil spring assembly to the grinding roll.

A primary classifier () particularly suited for use in a bowl mill () of the type that is employed for purposes of effecting the pulverization of materials such as coal is provided by the present invention. The primary classifier () includes a vane wheel portion () affixed to the periphery of the rotatable grinding surface () of the bowl mill () so as to extend circumferentially around the entire interior of the substantially closed separator body () of the bowl mill (). A bowl mill having a separator body, a grinding table and a plurality of grinding rolls for exerting grinding forces on material to be ground is provided with a plenum and a vane assembly for controlling the pressure conditions in the separator body. The vane assembly includes a plurality of vanes which rotate within the plenum to propel air from the plenum into an upper region of the separator body. This arrangement prevents or minimizes the penetration or migration of ground material into a lower region of the separator body of the bowl mill.

A vane wheel assembly (12) particularly suited for use in a mill (10) so as to be operative to effect a primary classification of the material such as coal that is subjected to pulverization within the mill (10). The subject vane wheel assembly (12) includes a first channel-like means (40) mounted in supported relation on the bowl (16) of the mill (10) for rotation therewith and so as to lie in a first plane which extends in a first direction. The subject vane wheel assembly (12) further includes a second channel-like means (42) mounted in fixed relation on the interior of the millside area (15) of the mill (10) at the exit end of the first channel-like means (40) so as to extend a full 360.degree. around the circumference of the millside area and so as to lie in a second plane that extends in a second direction which is inclined at a predetermined angle to the first plane of the first channel-like means (40).
