Film and sheet materials, and articles made therefrom, such as bags, pouches, trays, etc., comprise one or more layers of homogeneous alpha-olefin/vinyl aromatic copolymer, preferably an ethylene/styrene copolymer. The alpha-olefin/vinyl aromatic copolymer has properties which can provide a desired performance characteristics such as impact resistance, printability, RF sealability, free shrink, optics, high permeability, etc. The homogeneous alpha-olefin/vinyl aromatic copolymer may be present in a monolayer film, either alone or in a blend, or may be included in one or more layers of a multilayer film. Also included is a multilayer thermoformable article comprising a web having a film of such alpha-olefin/vinyl aromatic copolymers thereto.

Film and sheet materials, and articles made therefrom, such as bags, pouches, trays, etc., comprise one or more layers of a thermoplastic, homogeneous alpha-olefin/vinyl aromatic copolymer, preferably an ethylene/styrene copolymer. The alpha-olefin/vinyl aromatic copolymer has properties which can can provide a desired performance characteristics such as impact resistance, printability, RF sealability, free shrink, optics, as well as many others. The homogeneous alpha-olefin/vinyl aromatic copolymer may be present in a monolayer film, either alone or in a blend, or may be included in one or more layers of a multilayer film. Also included is a multilayer thermoformable article comprising a web having a film of such alpha-olefin/vinyl aromatic copolymers therto. Finally, also included is an RF-sealable film comprising such copolymers.

Multiple layer cook-in films are disclosed from which packages such as bags or casings can be made. The films have a first food contact layer with a core layer adhered thereto which includes a blend of a polymeric material having a high molecular weight and a fractional melt index and an ethylene alpha-olefin copolymer. The film further includes an abuse layer which has, at least, a polymeric material having a high molecular weight and a fractional melt index. Improved hold cold seal strength fresh and over time, improved orientation processing and lower shrink temperatures are obtained with the present core layer. The abuse layer and core layer adds to the processability of the material and improves optics.

The fractions of the phases of a composite material are determined utilizing a calibration relationship between at least one nondestructively measured quantity and a destructively measured phase fraction. The proper calibration relationship is selected from a multiple-variable regression relation, a single-variable regression of a product of two measured quantities, one of two single-variable regressions, or a weighted average of the results of two single-variable regressions, all four approaches utilizing nondestructive measurements of specimen consolidated height and specimen consolidated ultrasonic transit time. When prepreg material having uniaxial fibers is analyzed, multiple-layer specimens are formed by stacking the individual plies so that the fiber directions in adjacent layers are not parallel.
