A snap lock balance shoe of a balance system may be incorporated in pivotable double hung windows. In one embodiment, the snap lock balance shoe includes a pair of retractable tabs that partially extend through openings within an inverted window balance channel. The shoe includes a locking member that extends toward a window jamb when a cam of the shoe is rotated. This extension locks the balance system in place in the window jamb. During a method of assembly of the balance system, the snap lock balance shoe may be engaged with the channel and then pivoted to secure the snap lock balance shoe to the channel.

The shoe further includes a plurality of prongs disposed between the arms for retaining the sash pin, and a bore for retaining an attachment mechanism associated with a spring balance. In response to tilting of the window sash away from the vertical axis of the jamb or jambliner, the locking device assumes a locked position as the sash pin rotates the shoe, and the barb and the angled edge engage the walls of the jamb or jambliner. Once engaged, the shoe becomes wedged within the jamb or jambliner such that the shoe is locked in place and effectively counters the forces exerted thereon by the spring balance.

A window sash support and movement lock assembly reciprocably disposed within an associated track element. The sash support and movement lock assembly includes a body with a center opening and guide surfaces on each end. A cam unit is received in the center opening and, upon cam rotation caused by tilting of an associated window sash, the guide surfaces are biased apart and into snug engagement with parts of the track element; one part of one of the guide surfaces also carries one or more pins which then engage an end wall of the track unit to provide a secure locking action.
