A shotgun shell includes a sabot with a tubular portion extending from a e, a chamber disposed within the tubular portion in communication with an opening in the base, a load of shot disposed within the tubular portion around the chamber, and a valve disposed between the chamber and the opening to control the flow of propellant gases into and out of the chamber. The valve can be a choke with a flow constricting orifice that delays pressurization and depressurization of the chamber. Alternatively, or in addition to a choke valve, a movable valve member can be disposed between the chamber and the opening to seal with a valve seat in order to capture high pressure propellant gases which, upon emergence of the sabot from the gun barrel, will assist in creating a highly dispersed shot pattern at close range. Also disclosed are a number of ways in which the sabot can be modified to control the stiffness of the tubular portion in order to change the shape of the shot pattern to suit specific applications.

A self-inflatable parawing comprises an airfoil made of a flexible sheet erial and having a plurality of apertures located in the lower, aft surface thereof for admitting inflating air created by the positive air pressure of the air stream flowing over the airfoil. An inflatable support frame is located in the airfoil for providing spanwise stiffness to the airfoil. The support frame is inflated by means of a compressed gas cannister connected through a controllable valve to the support frame.

Sail structure for sailcraft for improved air flow transition from the saraft mast. Several embodiments are provided in which a pair of sail luff panels are maintained in close proximity to aft portion of the mast. In a first and second embodiment, inflatable tubular inserts which slidably mate with the bolt rope groove of the mast are provided. In third and fourth embodiments, stackable and keyed inserts which engage the bolt rope groove are provided. In fifth and sixth embodiments, bolt rope tracks or grooves are provided in the mast for maintaining the position of the luff panels.

Structure for aerodynamic transition between mast and sail in a sailcraft

A kinetic energy long rod penetrator is formed from a high density metal ing axially aligned elongated cavities uniformly spaced and extending longitudinally through the penetrator. These cavities allow for a long rod penetrator which is longer than previous long rod penetrators of comparable mass and material as well as a penetrator that is resistant to breakage.

A sabot for a shotgun shell provided with a recess in its base upon which opellant gases may act to radially expand and flatten the sabot thereby enhancing the dispersion of shot. In alternate embodiments the recess may be conoidal, parabolic, pyramidal, or an involute surface resembling a cone. The recess may also be comprised of multiple overlapping layers. Each recess provides a unique shot pattern for short-range antipersonnel engagements. In other embodiments, the foregoing recesses are provided with grooves to facilitate petalling of the recess and flattening of the sabot during and after launch. In another embodiment, the recess is filled with propellant and capped with a consumable plug to delay ignition of the propellant charge, further enhancing shot dispersion.

A sabot for an armor-piercing fin-stabilized discarding-sabot penetrator is rovided formed of continuous filaments wherein the sabot is preferably bucket shaped and the filaments are sufficiently long to be wrapped from the obturator rearward around the projectile base, and forward to the obturator on the opposite side of the sabot. The filaments are formed of glass, pyrolytic graphite or other high tensile strength light weight material. The sabot preferably has grooves to mesh with similar grooves on a penetrator body and some of the filaments are angled into at least a portion of said grooves.

Improved bulk-loaded liquid propellant guns are provided having a plurality of channels within the master chamber but not in contact with the gun barrel so as to obviate destructive pressure variances.

A sloop comprising a mast in the form of an A-frame with its plane athwartships. The luff of the mainsail is supported by a mainstay which is a thin wire or rod running from the apex of the A-frame vertically to a point on deck between the legs of the A-frame. This structure eliminates the turbulence along the leading edge or luff of the mainsail caused by conventional masts, and also permits a headsail to be closely hauled. The A-frame comprises one or more rigid horizontal spreaders and the mainsail boom and a spinnaker pole can be slidably mounted thereon.
