A high power density semiconductor module of reduced size and weight wherein a fusion element assembly for meeting electrical power processing requirements is nested in a hollow casing for both electrically insulating and operatively cooling by a single fluid medium. A pair of electrically conductive terminals penetrates the casing at opposite ends to make an electrical path through the fusion element assembly which resides within the casing as a stack in which each semiconductor fusion element is interleaved with plural heat sink elements undergoing a uniform compressive loading parameter. The stack is electrically insulated and cooled through transverse grooves in the fusion element assembly, which in one embodiment for space based utilization, is by way of finned heat sink or backing plate elements for passaging a dual function cryogen fluid such as supercritical liquid hydrogen. A terrestrial aviation or marine based utilization, provides that an ester base cooling oil having good dielectric properties may be instead used.

High power density solid-state, insulating coolant module

A casting mold in a continuous casting line has a counterflow electromagnetic stirring (CEMS) apparatus disposed about the mold. The CEMS apparatus includes electrically-conductive coils arranged in first and second groups of adjacent coils with the coils connected together in predetermined phase relationships for generating side-by-side magnetic fields in molten metal flowing through the casting mold. The first and second groups of adjacent coils are disposed respectively along respective halves of the casting mold with the coils in the first group generating one magnetic field and the coils in the second group generating the other magnetic field. The magnetic fields so generated in the molten metal move in counterrotating relation to one another about respective spaced axes extending generally parallel to one another and to the longitudinal axis of the casting mold. The counterrotating movement of the magnetic fields extends in transverse relation to the direction of molten metal flow through the casting mold and produces movement of molten metal in clockwise and counterclockwise stirring patterns in the casting mold in which the molten metal flowing in the respective patterns collide and intermix at the interface of the patterns.

Counterflow electromagnetic stirring method and apparatus for continuous

The polyphase stator winding of a dynamoelectric machine consists of a plurality of coils circumscribed about one another. Each coil has at least one end turn which includes two coil sides and a C-shaped connector ring that joins the coil sides together. The coil sides are straight conductors, or ones that are slightly bent on each end, and are embedded within the stator slots and extend into the end basket region of the machine where they are joined together by the C-shaped connector rings.

A rotor construction and end turn supporting arrangement for restraining field winding end turns within circumferential slots formed in dynamoelectric machine rotors. Longitudinal slots axially disposed along the rotor intersect the circumferential slots and provide an open-faced housing for disposal therein of the field winding between the axially separated circumferential slots. Wedges are provided for insertion in at least some of the slots for retention therein of the field winding during high-speed rotor rotation. Utilizing electrically conductive wedges in both the longitudinal slots and circumferential slots establishes a rotor cage for carrying undesired eddy currents which are often induced in the rotor material.
