Described herein are methods and systems for minimizing folding defects when rolling a paper product. The method comprises rotating a roll in a manner that draws a paper product toward the roll. The location of a pick-up point between the roll and the paper product is altered by influencing the air pressure experienced by the paper product. This may be accomplished by flowing air in one of several manners described in the specification.

An idler roll brake in a paper handing machine wherein the roll brake employs a brake shoe mounted to the roll end bearing. The brake shoe slides forward to bring the brake shoe against the interior surface of the roll. An electromagnet positioned external to and mounted closely spaced from the cylindrical shell the roll attracts a ferromagnetic armature or permanent magnet mounted to the brake to pull the brake shoe into engagement with the inner surface of the roll.

A tissue paper crimper of greater rigidity is provided by mounting crimper disks to linear bearings which in turn are mounted to a carriage which can be positioned in the cross machine direction on a frame. The crimper disks are pressed against anvil roll pneumatic actuators. The use of linear bearings allows the crimper to run at higher operating speeds. An air knife is positioned so that a jet of air following a Coanda surface periodically blows against the rotating crimping wheel and thereby removes fibers before they build up. Buildup of fibers on the crimping wheels from the tissue webs being crimped can cause the wheels to become unbalanced, resulting in undesirable vibration. The rigid mounting and the prevention of fiber buildup will allow the crimper of this invention to operate at higher machine speeds.

An idler roll brake in a paper handing machine employs an electromagnet positioned close to the periphery all of the idler roll which interacts with and induces eddy currents a conducive roll and a gear shaped steel ring fitted within the conducive roll. The electromagnet is arranged transverse to the axis of the roll and has three poles. The gear-shaped steel ring forms opposite poles which are attracted to the poles of the electromagnet which bring the roll to complete stop. An alternative embodiment roll brake employs a brake shoe mounted to the roll end bearing. The brake shoe slides forward to bring the brake shoe against the interior surface of the roll. An electromagnet positioned beneath the roll attracts a ferromagnetic armature or permanent magnet mounted to the brake to pull the brake shoe into engagement with the inner surface of the roll.

A guard is mounted for rotation about the downstream drum of a winder having two spaced apart winder drums which support a paper roll. The guard has a D-shaped leading-edge which approaches the paper roll. The leading-edge is articulated so that if an operator's hand becomes wedged between the leading-edge and the paper roll, articulation on the leading-edge closes a switch which brings the winder to a stop. A hydraulic actuator extends between a lowermost radial edge of each sector shaped extension and a fixed support. Operation of the hydraulic actuator causes the guard to rotate about the axis of the downstream winder drum so as to be between an operator and the downstream side of the winder drum. The leading edge of the the guard is positioned to limit operator access to the nip formed between the paper roll and the downstream winder drum.
