This invention relates to a novel fuel additive composition which provides reduced engine deposits and control of octane requirement increase in engines. The composition comprises:

Fuel compositions

Fuel additives and fuel additive compositions are described comprising: (i) at least one fuel-soluble detergent/dispersant which is (a) a fuel-soluble salt, amide, imide, oxazoline and/or ester, or a mixture thereof, of a long chain aliphatic hydrocarbon-substituted dicarboxylic acid or its anhydride, (b) a long chain aliphatic hydrocarbon having a polyamine attached directly thereto, and/or (c) a Mannich condensation product formed by condensing a long chain aliphatic hydrocarbon-substituted phenol with an aldehyde, and an amine; wherein the long chain hydrocarbon group in (a), (b) and (c) is a polymer of at least one C.sub.2 to C.sub.10 monoolefin, said polymer having a number average molecular weight of at least about 300; (ii) a fuel-soluble cyclopentadienyl complex of a transition metal; and (iii) a fuel-soluble liquid carrier or additive induction aid. These compositions in use enable surprising improvements in intake valve deposit control as well as other advantages.

Compositions for control of induction system deposits

New, highly effective detergent/dispersants for use in spark ignition fuels are described. They are Mannich condensation products formed from (i) one mole part of hydroxyaromatic compound having on the ring an aliphatic hydrocarbyl substituent derived from a polyolefin having a number average molecular weight in the range of about 500 to about 3000, (ii) from 0.8 to 1.5 mole part(s) of aliphatic polyamine having one and only one primary or secondary amino group in the molecule capable of participating in the Mannich condensation reaction, and (iii) from 0.8 to 1.3 mole part(s) of aldehyde, provided that the mole ratio of aldehyde to amine is 1.2 or less. Carrier fluids such as poly(oxyalkylene) compounds further enhance the effectiveness of these Mannich condensation products in minimizing or reducing intake valve deposits and/or intake valve sticking.

Additives for minimizing intake valve deposits, and their use

The combination of a fuel-soluble succinimide detergent/dispersant, a fuel-soluble liquid carrier or induction aid therefor, and a fuel-soluble cyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl compound can sharply reduce the formation or accumulation of engine deposits such as intake valve deposits in internal combustion engines. In fact, such compositions can function synergistically whereby the effectiveness of a highly effective succinimide-based deposit control additive can be improved by the addition thereto of the manganese compound, the latter not known to be a substance that reduces deposits.

Compostions for control of induction system deposits

A highly effective fuel additive composition for control of intake valve deposits is described. It comprises (a) a gasoline-soluble Mannich reaction product of (i) a high molecular weight alkyl-substituted phenol, (ii) amine, and (iii) aldehyde; (b) a gasoline-soluble poly(oxyalkylene) carbamate; and (c) a gasoline-soluble poly(oxyalkylene) alcohol, glycol or polyol, or mono or diether thereof. Fuel compositions and methods of controlling engine deposits are also described.

Fuel compositions and additives therefor

Fuels, methods of producing fuels, and methods of using fuels to reduce the amount of atmospheric pollutants (NOx, CO, and/or hydrocarbons) formed on combustion of middle distillate fuels in engines or burner apparatus. These results can be achieved without concomitant increases in emissions of particulates. The fuels contain less than 500 ppm of sulfur and at least one peroxy ester combustion improver.

Fuel compositions with enhanced combustion characteristics

This invention relates to a method for enhancing an additive concentrate package so as to improve its shelf-life stability comprising forming an additive concentrate containing (i) a major amount of detergent/dispersant and (ii) a minor amount of demulsifier; and admixing a solvent stabilizer composition with said additive concentrate in an amount sufficient to improve the shelf-life stability of the additive concentrate package.

Enhanced hydrocarbonaceous additive concentrate

This invention relates to a method for enhancing a fuel additive package so as to improve the shelf-life of the package comprising forming a fuel additive package containing (i) a major amount of detergent/dispersant and (ii) a minor amount of demulsifier; and admixing a solvent stabilizer composition with said additive package in an amount sufficient to improve the shelf-life of the fuel additive package.

Middle distillate fuels and additives therefor

This invention relates to stabilizer additives for hydrocarbonaceous fuels comprising at least one or a mixture of hexahydrotriazine compounds and at least one or a mixture of imine compounds.

When a phenol having substituents in at least the 2- and 4-positions but having a hydrogen atom in the 6-position, or a phenol having substituents in at least the 2- and 6-positions but having a hydrogen atom in the 4-position is reacted with formaldehyde and 1,3-propanediamine, a unique insertion-condensation reaction occurs whereby the product is a hexahydropyrimidine derivative which may be represented by the general formula ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 is (i) a 2-hydroxybenzyl group having an inert substituent (preferably a hydrocarbyl substituent) in at least the 3- and 5-positions or (ii) a 4-hydroxybenzyl group having an inert substituent (preferably a hydrocarbyl substituent) in at least the 3- and 5-positions; and R.sub.2 is (i) a 2-hydroxybenzyl group having an inert substituent (preferably a hydrocarbyl substituent) in at least the 3- and 5-positions or (ii) a 4-hydroxybenzyl group having an inert substituent (preferably a hydrocarbyl substituent) in at least the 3- and 5-positions or (iii) a hydrogen atom. Uses for such compounds include their use as antioxidants and stabilizers for various substrates, such as fuels, lubricants, and functional fluids.

Hexahydropyrimidine derivatives

Oligomers of polymerizable ester-containing halopolyalkylenes are effective as cold flow improvers in middle distillate fuels.
