Methods and systems for illuminating areas or objects in areas by manipulating the spectral power distributions (SPDs) of light sources. In one aspect, light of a given desired correlated color temperature (CCT), white in one example, is adjusted by a metamer to a different SPD designed to produce improved perceived brightness by observers. This retains the desired CCT but can allow for such things as reduced number of light fixtures or light sources, less energy, and/or longer effective light source lives for the same perceived brightness of conventional lightings. In another aspect, composite SPD regardless of CCT can be manipulated for other benefits such as highlighting portions of or objects in the area, or improving lighting performance for such things as weather conditions (e.g. snow or fog) or ambient conditions (e.g. twilight).

Varying color of LED light using metamers

Presented is a design of modular LED lighting fixture whereby the steps of light directing and light redirecting are independent, but cooperative, so to promote a compact fixture design with low effective projected area (EPA), good thermal properties, and a selectable degree of glare control. A lighting system employing a plurality of said fixtures is highly customizable yet has the potential to be pre-aimed and pre-assembled prior to shipping, which reduces the potential for installation error while preserving the customized nature of the fixtures.

An apparatus, system and method for aiming solid state lighting modules that are mounted in a lighting fixture. The apparatus comprises an aiming station space from a projection surface. At least one reference laser projects from at or near the aiming station to the projection surface. The lighting module is preliminary attached to a supporting structure or rail that is mounted at the aiming station. An aiming laser is temporarily attached to the housing. The module is manually adjusted on its mounting rail to align its aiming laser with a reference position on the projection surface. The module is then locked in to position.

Apparatus, system, and method for aiming LED modules

A method, system, or apparatus for evaluating and/or improving illumination of a wide area target area or space above the same. Illumination of the area or space is evaluated relative to conventional illumination levels and spectral features. At least a portion of illumination is adjusted in some aspect of spectral profile to improve contrast between a target in the space or aspects of the target area or space. The adjusted illumination can be uplight, downlight, or both. Optionally, an object is launched to a known height above a lighting location, and the luminance from the object is read by a calibrated sensor, enabling verification of adequate uplighting.

Each light source is associated with individually adjustable fixture components which allow for a variety of lighting needs to be addressed. A lens is provided which is elongated along an axis so to accommodate a linear array of LEDs, the elongation of the lens resulting in a corresponding elongation of the beam output pattern; in practice, the axis of elongation may be oriented so to suit a target area or some portion thereof. Improved lighting devices and methods are provided. In many embodiments, the devices and methods provide the capability to change a spot of light projected onto a target surface. In other embodiments, the devices and methods are fixed-focus. In one embodiment a lens can have a lens body with anterior and posterior surfaces. The anterior surface can be adapted to receive light from a light source. The posterior surface can have a central portion and a peripheral portion. Some of the light from the light source can pass through the lens body and exit the central portion of the posterior surface via refraction. Some of the light from the light source can pass through the lens body and exit the peripheral portion of the posterior surface via both refraction and reflection at various surfaces of the lens.
