A data storage interface for coupling data between processors and a bank of disk. The interface includes a plurality of first directors coupled to the processors and a plurality of second directors coupled to the bank of disk drives. A cache memory is coupled between the plurality of first directors and the plurality of second directors. The interface includes a pair of independent power busses. At least one of the first or second directors is coupled to the pair of independent power busses. One portion of the disk drives in the bank is connected to only a first one of the pair of power buses and a different portion of the disk drives is connected to only the other one of the pair of power buses. A power circuit includes a pair of input terminals, each one being electrically connected to a corresponding one of the pair of independent power busses. The circuit includes an output terminal. A pair of switching transistor sections is provided. The transistor switching sections is serially connected between a corresponding one of the pair of input terminals and the output terminal. A logic network is provided for operating the switching sections to prevent current passing into one of the pair of input terminals from one of the power busses from passing into the other one of the power buses. The logic section operates the switching sections to prevent current from one of the pair of power buses to the one of the input terminals connected thereto from exceeding a predetermined value, and operates the switching sections to prevent a difference between a voltage at one of the input terminals and a voltage at the other one of the input terminals from exceeding a predetermined value.

Dual power bus data storage system

An electronic system has critical circuitry, non-critical circuitry having a first section and a second section, and a power sub-system. The power sub-system has a first power assembly, a second power assembly, and a set of connections. The set of connections is configured to connect the first and second power assemblies to the critical circuitry and the non-critical circuitry such that, when the first and second power assemblies operate to power the critical and non-critical circuitry through the set of connections, (i) a failure of only the second power assembly results in the first power assembly continuing to power the critical circuitry and the first section of the non-critical circuitry, and (ii) a failure of only the first power assembly results in the second power assembly continuing to power the critical circuitry and the second section of the non-critical circuitry.

Methods and apparatus for providing power to electronic circuitry

A data server having a plurality of hot replaceable processing unit modules. Each module includes a motherboard having plugged therein: a CPU; a main memory; an I/O adapter card, and an interconnect printed board, electrically connected to the motherboard. A backplane has a first connector adapted for coupling to a DC power supply. The interconnect printed circuit board has a DC to DC converter connected to a second connector adapted to mate with the first connector to enable the processing unit module to be hot plugged into, or removed from, the backplane. The backplane has formed thereon a strip transmission line adapted to provide an Ethernet bus for interconnecting a plurality of the modules. A cable management system for a cabinet used to house the module includes at least one vertically extending channel disposed in the cabinet and a fastener adapted to open and enable the a cable to be inserted into the channel and close to retain such cable within the channel. A chassis having a plurality of shelves for supporting electrical modules with a partitioning member adapted for removable insertion onto one of the shelves to accommodate modules with different widths. An I/O adapter card mounting plate, with captive hardware, adapted for securing an array of I/O adapted cards, and honey-combed I/O adapter card filler plate to a case. Data server with hot replaceable processing unit modules

An electronic system has electronic circuitry and an electronic cabinet that houses the electronic circuitry. The electronic cabinet includes a frame that holds the electronic circuitry, a set of exterior members that mounts to the frame, and a stabilization assembly. The stabilization assembly has a base portion that attaches to the frame of the electronic cabinet in order to support the frame of the electronic cabinet over a floor surface, a pedestal portion, and a positioner. The positioner is configured to position the pedestal portion of the stabilization assembly relative to the frame such that the pedestal portion of the stabilization assembly is substantially wider than the frame along a particular direction when the pedestal of the stabilization assembly portion resides in an operating position relative to the frame. The pedestal portion can prevent the electronic cabinet from inadvertently being knocked over if pushed in the particular direction.

Methods and apparatus for installing electronic cabinets using improved stabilization techniques

Transceivers are selectively activated to reduce power in a network of data processing devices linked by a data transmission loop. Each of the devices is linked by a transceiver, and passes data from a previous device in the loop to a next device in the loop when not transmitting data onto the loop. For example, the data processing devices are disk drives in a storage subsystem. Delays in establishing communication after transceiver activation can be avoided by continuously powering a bit clock oscillator or bit synchronizer. In one embodiment, a loop controller in the loop sends activation and deactivation signals to addressed transceivers via an auxiliary channel. In another embodiment, when a device detects that communication is occurring between other devices for a certain period of time, the device selectively deactivates its transceiver for the certain period of time. For redundancy, the data processing devices can be connected via dual loops, and then power is further reduced by activating at most one of the two transceivers in a device at any given time. In this case, if a transceiver failure occurs, the failed transceiver is bypassed and the other transceiver for the device is activated. For example, when a loop controller detects a transceiver failure, the loop controller sends transceiver activation and deactivation signals over the auxiliary channel.
