A suspension system for supporting fore- and aft extending frame members of a vehicle chassis on a hollow axle, the system on one side of the vehicle being duplicated on the opposite side. Included in the suspension on each side are: (1) a frame bracket for pivotally supporting the fore or leading end of an asymmetric leaf spring; (2) a spring end support mounted on the frame side member for supporting the aft or trailing end of the leaf spring, and (3) a suitable assembly for attaching the leaf spring at a location intermediate its opposite ends to the axle so that the spring is divided into two cantilever limbs extending in opposite directions from the center line of the axle. The spring is formed so that one of the cantilever limbs has a stiffness substantially greater than the stiffness of the other limb. In all forms, at least one leaf of the asymmetric spring extends the full length of the spring. In one particular form the spring has a shorter leaf with an end portion extending over the axle with an air spring mounted either directly over the axle or on one side of the axle. Instead of having two leafs, the asymmetric spring may be formed as a tapered convolute single-leaf spring.

Truck suspensions incorporating asymmetric leaf springs

A fabricated vehicle axle is shown to include a main body having an inverted U-shaped configuration. The fabricated vehicle axle further includes a continuous bottom plate welded to the main body. The fabricated axle also includes a first king pin top plate having a reversed curved fork portion welded to the main body at one end thereof. Similarly, the fabricated vehicle axle includes a second king pin top plate having a reversed curved fork portion welded to the main body at an opposite end thereof. Still further, the fabricated vehicle axle includes a first gooseneck part welded to the first king pin top plate and the first end of the bottom plate. Similarly, the fabricated vehicle axle includes a second gooseneck part welded to the second king pin top plate and the second end of the bottom plate. REEXAMINATION RESULTS The questions raised in reexamination request 90/007,703, filed Sep. 1, 2005 have been considered and the results thereof are reflected in this reissue patent which constitutes the reexamination certificate required by 35 U.S.C. 307 as provided in 37 CFR 1.570(e), for ex parte reexaminations, or the reexamination certificate required by 35 U.S.C. 316 as provided in 37 CFR 1.99(e) for inter partes reexaminations.

Fabricated vehicle axle

A vehicle steering knuckle assembly for use in association with a vehicle steering axle assembly is shown to include an upper piece having a first king pin bore extending through it and a backbone piece removably connectable to the first piece. The backbone has a second king pin bore extending through it. The upper piece has an integral steering arm and a pad through which is machined a steering ball taper. The lower piece has an integral tie rod and a pad through which is machined a tie rod ball taper. Because the two pieces are removable from each other, the steering knuckle can be assembled and serviced while a king pin is retained in place in an axle beam.

A fabricated vehicle axle is shown to include a main body having an inverted U-shaped configuration. The fabricated vehicle axle further includes a continuous bottom plate welded to the main body. The fabricated axle also includes a first king pin top plate having a reversed curved fork portion welded to the main body at one end thereof. Similarly, the fabricated vehicle axle includes a second king pin top plate having a reversed curved fork portion welded to the main body at an opposite end thereof. Still further, the fabricated vehicle axle includes a first gooseneck part welded to the first king pin top plate and the first end of the bottom plate. Similarly, the fabricated vehicle axle includes a second gooseneck part welded to the second king pin top plate and the second end of the bottom plate.

The invention relates to suspensions for trucks and trailers and to systems for clamping an axle housing to a combination suspension support member and spring in such a way that the axle housing is clamped and compressed uniformly on all four sides whereby there is no appreciable tendency for the axle housing to collapse or become deformed so as to require frequent retorquing of the clamping bolts. The system uses interfitting bottom and top axle housing wraps. The bottom axle wrap has upwardly extending sides engaging opposite sides of the axle housing either directly or against interfitting downward extensions on the top axle housing wrap. Vertical clamping bolts cause the upwardly extending sides on the bottom wrap to press inwardly against the sides of the axle housing.

Axle clamp attachment system

A railcar cushioning device includes an elastomeric spring and a hydraulic shock absorber member. The fluid accumulator is located outside of and above the fluid chambers. The accumulator is in communication with the fluid chamber in a non-stroked position, causing entrapped air to be displaced by the fluid, into the accumulator. Free of air, the shock absorber immediately responds to impact forces. The elastomeric spring reduces peak impact forces and returns the piston of the shock absorber to its non-stroked position. The elastomeric spring also absorbs draft forces.
