An improved handheld electronic device and an associated method are provided in which time data regarding certain aspects of a messaging conversation on a handheld electronic device are made available to a user. Such time data is provided, for instance, in situations where an interruption has occurred during a messaging conversation. Time data can also be provided to a user on demand in certain circumstances.

A method and devices for handling crossed-invite situations in set-up of IP-based sessions. A local device receives an incoming session invite after sending an outgoing session invite before the outgoing session invite has been accepted. It then determines that the incoming session invite was sent by the remote device to which the outgoing session invite is also addressed. The method includes determining a remote device priority value from identifying information contained in the incoming session invite, comparing the remote device priority value with a local device priority value to determine whether the remote device or the local device is higher priority and, if the remote device is higher priority, canceling the outgoing session invite and displaying an incoming call answer screen for the incoming session invite, and if the local device is higher priority, waiting for cancelation of the incoming session invite and acceptance of the outgoing session invite.

Crossed-invite call handling

A method for using an accessory with a mobile device is disclosed. The method includes: causing at least one camera of the mobile device to capture one or more images of a pattern on an accessory that is being used with the mobile device; determining a type associated with the accessory based on the one or more images; and entering an accessory-specific operating mode in which behavior of the mobile device is controlled to accommodate features that are specific to the accessory type.

A method and apparatus for managing IM conversations is provided. In response to idle time and, preferably, read message status, particular current conversations are removed from a list of current conversations. The removed conversations may be moved to an archive which may be automatically maintained in response to size constraints. An archive interface is facilitated to review conversations, save all or portions thereof, delete, etc. The archived conversations are preferably associated with the contact for the conversation to show a history of conversations.

A method for using an accessory with a mobile device is disclosed. The present disclosure provide embodiments of an apparatus and method for selecting a line from two or more lines on a communication device. In accordance with one embodiment of the present disclosure, there is provided a method, comprising: detecting initiation of an outgoing call from a communication device to a target party, the communication device having at least two lines; identifying the target party in contact information; determining which of the at least two lines is associated with the target party; in response to the detecting the initiation of the outgoing call, operating the communication device to make the outgoing call to the target party using the associated line.

Method and apparatus for line selection in a communication device

A telephone station apparatus that is arranged to operate on two, or more, communication lines, receives an instruction to access a voicemail server. The telephone station apparatus switches from a first communication line to a second communication line and initiates a call to the voicemail server. At the voicemail server, calling line identification allows the voicemail server to present an interface to the voicemail box associated with the second communication line.

To provide a consistent (i.e., single-mode) user interface in each mode of operation available on a multi-mode mobile terminal, aspects of the user interface used for a second mode (e.g., the CDMA mode) are emulated by the mobile terminal when the mobile terminal is operating in a first mode (e.g., the GSM mode). Responsive to receiving, while operating in a first mode, an indication of a given user interface interaction, the multi-mode mobile terminal determines the call state. Based on the given user interface interaction and the call state, the multi-mode mobile terminal selects a candidate message corresponding to operation of the multi-mode mobile terminal in a second mode. The multi-mode mobile terminal then converts the candidate message to one or more first-mode messages and transmits the one or more first-mode messages to the MSC at the second wireless network subsystem.
