The present invention is directed to a computer-implemented method and apparatus for searching in response to Internet-based search queries using a search engine and an electronic database. According to one example embodiment of the present invention, data sets representing printed items from publications respectively printed by a plurality of respective publishers are input, e.g., scanned-in, and stored in a searchable database. Each data set includes text from at least one printed item. Responsive to the search query, a search engine searches for and identifies relevant web pages and data sets representing printed items from publications and, in a more specific embodiment, ranked characterizations are returned for the relevant web pages and publication items. Another aspect of the present invention is directed to an electronic path for accessing further information about a relevant publication item. In one embodiment, the electronic path is a hyperlink from a characterization of a relevant publication item to a more complete electronic representation of the relevant publication item. Publishers provide authorization to display copyrighted materials through a permission protocol.

Method for searching media

The present invention is directed to a computer-implemented method and apparatus for searching in response to Internet-based search queries using a search engine and an electronic database. A method assigns importance ranks to nodes in a linked database, such as any database of documents containing citations, the world wide web or any other hypermedia database. The rank assigned to a document is calculated from the ranks of documents citing it. In addition, the rank of a document is calculated from a constant representing the probability that a browser through the database will randomly jump to the document. The method is particularly useful in enhancing the performance of search engine results for hypermedia databases, such as the world wide web, whose documents have a large variation in quality.

Scoring documents in a linked database

A system facilitates a search by a user. The system detects selection of one or more words in a document currently accessed by the user, generates a search query using the selected word(s), and retrieves a document based on the search query. When the document includes one or more links corresponding to a linked document, the system analyzes each of the links, prefetches the linked documents corresponding to a number of the links, and presents the document to the user. The system receives selection of one of the links and retrieves the linked document corresponding to the selected link. The system identifies one or more pieces of information in the retrieved document, determines a link to a related document for each of the identified pieces of information, and provides the determined links with the related document to the user.

Hypertext browser assistant

A system modifies documents to aid users in determining which of the entries in the documents to choose. The system identifies a document that includes one or more entries. The system determines a score for each of the entries and modifies the identified document, or entries in the identified document, based on the determined scores. The system then provides the modified document to a user.

Systems and methods for modifying the order of links presented in a document

Systems and methods for determining a user interface attribute are described. In one method described, a display processor receives a request to display a content display in a user interface, detects an area of the user interface comprising non-primary content, and creates a content display having an attribute, the attribute associated with the area of the user interface comprising non-primary content. Such a method may also include modifying the attribute in response to changes in the area of the user interface comprising non-primary content.

Systems and methods for determining a user interface attribute

A method may include identifying a linked document that is linked to by a group of linking documents; identifying links between the linking documents and the linked document; assigning a weight to each of the identified links; and determining a score for the linked document based on the identified links between the linking documents and the linked document, and the weights assigned to each of the identified links.

Scoring documents in a database

A method may include identifying a group of documents; identifying linking documents that include links to the identified documents; assigning a measure of importance to one or more of the linking documents; and generating a score for each of the identified documents based on the measure of importance assigned to at least one of the linking documents that includes a link to the identified document.
