A slide gate plate comprising a burned refractory that is impregnated with tar and baked, said refractory made from a composition comprising about 70 to 95 wt. % alumina, 1 to 10 wt. % reactive alumina, 1 to 5 wt. % volatilized silica, and, 3 to 15 wt. % silicon carbide and the method of increasing the service life of such slide gate plate by forming the same from the above-noted composition.

Mixes for forming high alumina refractory shapes with high resistance to aluminum penetration comprising at least about 60% by weight aluminum oxide, about 1 to 5% by weight boron phosphate, and about 5 to 15% by weight silicon carbide. A phosphorous-containing binder is added and the mix can be formed into brick which when cured or burned to a temperature below the oxidation temperature of silicon carbide can be used to minimize aluminum penetration and dross when the brick are employed in a metallurgical vessel in contact with molten aluminum.

High alumina refractory shapes

The present invention provides an as-fired, high alumina, low silica, corrosion resistant, refractory product and a method for making said product where the product includes from about 50 wt. % to about 80 wt. % of a bubble alumina, from about 10 wt. % to about 30 wt. % of a fine calcined alumina and from about 5 wt. % to about 20 wt. % of a fine hydrated alumina. The product is characterized by having an alumina content of at least 98 wt. % alumina, a silica content of less than 1 wt. %, a density of from about 80 to about 95 pounds per cubic feet, a porosity of from about 55% to about 65%, a room temperature modulus of rupture of at least 200 psig and a cold crushing strength of from at least 200 psi.

A monolithic refractory with improved resistance to molten aluminum and a method of imparting the resistance by adding 0.2 to 1 wt.% polyvinyl chloride powder to the base mix.
