The present invention relates to prosthetic knee devices providing for an expanded range of translational movement without substantially reducing the risk of inadvertent dislocation of the knee when implanted. The devices of the invention achieve the expanded range of motion without requiring a substantial posterioral shifting of the points of contact between the femoral and tibial components. The prostheses of the invention also reduce the risk of breakdown of the plastic components of the prosthesis and the underlying resectioned proximal tibia surface by providing an expanded, winged fixation post.

Posteriorly-stabilized prosthetic knee

A tibial prosthesis with independent medial and lateral baseplates. The baseplates can be coupled together for simultaneous implantation using an implantation apparatus. A high-molecular weight polyethylene upper part with articulating surface can then be attached both to the baseplates and to the tibia. The resulting prosthesis can conform to the stabil condition of the tibia without rocking in the baseplates. Bony ingrowth from the tibial head into special surfaces of the baseplates securely attaches the baseplates to the tibial head and the possibility of diminished fixation is reduced.

Tibial prosthesis with independent medial and lateral baseplates

An apparatus for removably attaching a sleeve to a stem of a femoral prosthesis. The stem has a tapered portion midway along the stem rather than along the complete length of the stem or near the tip of the stem. There is a corresponding tapered portion on an inside surface of the sleeve near one end of the sleeve only.
