A hybrid electric vehicle includes a high voltage DC bus and an internal combustion engine. The internal combustion engine is mechanically coupled to a non self-excited generator/motor which is preferably a switched reluctance machine. A power inverter electrically and bidirectionally couples the high voltage DC bus to the non self-excited switched reluctance generator/motor. Front and rear axle dual DC-AC inverters electrically and bidirectionally couple two traction AC non self-excited switched reluctance motors/gear reducers to the high voltage DC bus for moving the vehicle and for regenerating power. An ultracapacitor coupled to the high voltage DC bus. A bidirectional DC-DC converter interposed between a low voltage battery and the high voltage DC bus transfers energy to the high voltage DC bus and ultracapacitor to ensure that the non self-excited switched reluctance generator/motor operating in the motor mode is able to start the engine.

Hybrid electric vehicle

An electric wheel motor cooling system includes first and second electric wheel motors and gear reducers which use hydraulic fluid for cooling and lubrication. Each of the electric wheel motor housings includes a sump and a scavenge pump for return of hydraulic fluid to the hydraulic fluid reservoir. A remotely located hydraulic pump interconnected with the hydraulic fluid reservoir supplies and powers first and second locally located hydraulic motors which supply the electric motors and gears with an equal flow of lubricating and cooling oil. The first and second hydraulic motors, in turn, drive a common output shaft which, in turn, drives first and second scavenge pumps. The first and second scavenge pumps have a higher fluid flow rate than the hydraulic motors ensuring that oil is removed from the first and second electric wheel motor housings thus eliminating any churning losses of the motors or gears.

An adjustment mechanism for a vehicle brake uses an electric motor to adjust brake clearance based on brake temperature and wheel speed. A temperature sensor transmits brake temperature data to a controller. If a brake is dragging during non-braking events, the controller identifies an increase in brake temperature and actuates the electric motor to increase brake clearance. The controller also adjusts brake clearance to accommodate for brake wear. When wheel speed is above a predetermined speed value, the controller actuates the electric motor to move a non-rotating brake component toward a rotating brake component until a predetermined temperature increase is sensed. Once the predetermined temperature increase is identified, the electric motor moves the non-rotating brake component away from the rotating brake component to provide an optimized brake clearance.

Temperature based clearance control for vehicle brake

A slider locking pin control receives feedback of the actual position of the locking pins. If the locking pins are not engaged in the trailer frame rails, then the interlock valve will vent air to release a parking brake. Once the locking pins are engaged, the interlock valve will allow the flow of air to release the parking brakes. If the vehicle operator attempts to move the vehicle, but the locking pins are not engaged, the operator will be unable to release the parking brakes. This will prevent movement of the trailer until the locking pins are engaged. The interlock valve is placed downstream of a spring brake control valve and pressurized air reservoir, such that the pressurized air reservoir can still receive pressurized air to charge, and provide air for use by various components on the trailer.
