A typical system environment comprises a terminal device, a secure storage subsystem, and an interconnectivity component. The terminal device has a network connectivity subsystem enabled for data connectivity with a wireless communications network. The secure storage subsystem has a secure storage memory for securely storing contents and is enabled for local RF connectivity through a local RF communication subsystem. The secure storage subsystem is operable as a contactless smartcard in accordance with any contactless technology. The interconnectivity component is adapted to enable communication of the secure storage subsystem through the network connectivity subsystem with the network. The interconnectivity component is further configured to detect that messages received from the network are destined for the secure storage subsystem and is configured to supply that identified messages to the secure storage subsystem. The messages enable exercising control over the secure storage subsystem in that the messages comprise one or more instructions to be processed by a secure memory controller of the secure storage subsystem.

A method and a server for providing transaction keys for a transaction system includes transaction units which use pre-delivered transaction keys, and are provided by a key provisioning server and wherein the transaction key usage is checked by a transaction checking server. A transaction key is derived from a master key of a transaction unit, wherein a varying derivation parameter is used in the step of deriving. The step of deriving comprises a first sub step of deriving a key from the master key and a second sub step of deriving the transaction key from the derived key. The first sub step or the second sub step of deriving is performed dependent on a security level of the transaction unit.

A system and method for initializing secure elements for use in mobile devices. A mobile device manufacturer embeds uninitialized secure elements into mobile devices. An issuer-specific seed value is securely passed into an initialization routine in the operating system of the secure element. The initialization routine diversifies the initial root keys on the secure element with the issuer seed and the unique chip serial number to create master and chip keys for use in secure communications between the issuer and the mobile device user.
