A method for distributing timing information in a radio communication system comprising: a network including a plurality of base stations, each capable of transmitting and receiving radio communication signals to and from a respective coverage area, and including a first base station and one or more neighboring base stations whose coverage areas neighbor the coverage area of the first base station; and a first mobile station capable of receiving signals from the first base station; the method comprising: estimating the differences in timing between those base stations; and transmitting indications of those differences in timing to the first mobile station.

Communication system

A link between a mobile station operating within a universal mobile telecommunications system (UMTS) is checked either at the mobile station itself or within a Radio Network Controller (RNC) of the UMTS to determine an error rate greater than a threshold. If found to be operating at greater than the error rate threshold, the bitrate of the link is reduced. If more than one PDP context is present then the PDP contexts can be reduced one at a time, according to selected criteria, until the error rate is reduced below the threshold. Once the interference is reduced to a level that will support the services at their former level, the mobile station can once again begin freely operating at a bitrate between the minimum guaranteed bitrate and a maximum bitrate, commencing randomly if under the control of the mobile station, or according to a timed sequence if controlled from the RAN.

Mechanism to benefit from min and max bitrates

The invention relates to a method for eliminating interference in an OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) radio receiver In the method, coded signals that are transmitted on subcarriers are received, reliability information generated for the signals being used in their soft decoding In accordance with the invention, the signal-to-interference ration of the subcarrier is used as the reliability information, the signal-to-interference ratio being defined by dividing the amplitude of the received signal by the interference amplitude. The interference amplitude is generated by calculating the deviation of the amplitudes of a set of selected signals from the average amplitude level of the set of signals. The average amplitude level of the set of signals is the mean value, median or some other statistical quantity indicative of the average level of the amplitudes of the set of signals. The deviation from the average amplitude level of the set of signals is the standard deviation, variance or some other statistical deviation-indicating quality of the set of signals. The amplitudes of the set of signals are selected from successive symbols in the time domain and/or from adjacent subcarriers in the frequency domain. The invention also relates to an OFDM radio receiver using the method.

Method for eliminating interference in an OFDM radio receiver

Mobile communications apparatus ( ) are arranged to transmit encoded speech in accordance with a first protocol and to transmit extended data in accordance with a second protocol.
