Described herein are alkali-free, boroalumino silicate glasses exhibiting desirable physical and chemical properties for use as substrates in flat panel display devices, such as, active matrix liquid crystal displays (AMLCDs). The glass compositions possess numerous properties that are compatible with the downdraw process, particularly fusion drawing.

Oxyhalide glass fining

The present invention relates to a boroaluminosilicate glass which exhibits excellent UV transmission. In particular, the present invention is directed at an alkali fluorine-doped boroaluminosilicate glass comprising, in mole percent on the oxide basis, of 30-80% SiO, 1-20% Al(O, F), 5-35% BO, 5-20% RO, where R is Li, Na, K, Rb or Cs, and an amount of up to 12% of F. The glass possesses an R/Al molar ratio of between 0.4 to 3 and an F/O molar ratio of no greater than 0.35. The alkali fluorine-doped boroaluminosilicate glass of the present invention exhibits a UV transmission at 300 nm, of greater than 80%/mm.

UV transmitting glasses

A host material for Tm -doping is provided. The host material is a fluorophosphate glass having a non-zero concentration of Tm , cation elements that include at least an alkaline earth, phosphorus, and aluminum, and anion elements that include oxygen (O) and fluorine (F). The fluorine(F)/oxygen (O) ratio (F/(F&plus;O)) for the fluorophosphate glass of the embodiments of the present invention can be in the range of about 0.5 to about 0.85. The fluorophosphate glass further can have an alkali metal concentration of 10 mole % or less to improve durability. The Tm-doped fluorophosphate glass can be incorporated into an amplifier or laser utilized in the 14xx nm wavelength region.

Tm-doped fluorophosphate glasses for 14xx amplifiers and lasers

Materials, both glass and glass-ceramic, that exhibit UV-induced changes in light transmission and electrical conductivity behavior. The materials consist essentially, in mole %, of 20-40% SiO , 10-20% AlO , 35-55% SiO &plus;AlO , at least 30% CdF , 0-20% PbF , and/or ZnF , 0-15% rare earth metal fluoride, and 45-65% total metal fluorides.

The present invention is directed to a fluorinated rare earth doped glass composition and method for making a glass-ceramic optical article therefrom, e.g. optical fiber waveguides, fiber lasers and active fiber amplifiers, having application in the 1300 nm and 1550 nm telecommunications windows. The inventive compositions include Pr and/or Dy in a concentration range of between 300-2,000 ppmw and Ag in a concentration range of between 500-2000 ppmw; or Er in a concentration range of between 500-5,000 ppmw and Ag in a concentration range of between 0-2,000 ppmw. The monovalent silver ion provides an ionic charge balanced glass-ceramic crystal. These compositions exhibit reduced or absent rare earth ion clustering and fluorescence quenching effects in the presence of high concentrations of rare earth ion dopants.

A method for foming glass articles of substantial thickness from unstable glass compositions which normally devitrify when formed by conventional casting or molding processes, is disclosed. The method includes the steps of quench-cooling the glass to form a crystal-free glass feedstock material, and then pressure-consolidating the feedstock at a temperature between the transition temperature and the crystallization temperature of the glass.

Method for making a glass article

Disclosed is a method and apparatus for drawing an elongated glass article such as a fiber optic device. The article is drawn upwardly from a source through the surface of a quantity of molten metal having a vertical temperature gradient. The source can be an elongated solid glass preform that is vertically positioned within the molten metal such that the temperature of that portion of the molten metal adjacent the upper end region is sufficiently high to heat that region to drawing temperature. The upper end region is pulled to form a tapered root, continued pulling resulting in the formation of an elongated article from the small diameter root end. The relative position of the root is maintained with respect to the surface of the molten metal during the drawing operation. Alternatively, the glass can be drawn from an orifice located within the molten metal. The apparatus includes container means for supporting the molten metal, and external or internal means for heating and/or cooling portions of the molten metal. The container can also be provided with baffle means for dividing the container into a plurality of chambers.
