The present invention concerns a method for determining whether brain regions of interest having reversible or irreversible pathology. The method includes acquiring over a predetermined period of time a plurality of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) images for each brain region of interest; analyzing the MRI images to obtain quantitative measurements of the fractional anisotropy (FA) for each brain region of interest and determining that brain regions of interest have reversible pathology when the measured FA increases and then decreases over the predetermined period of time.

A method of measuring the concentration of a magnetic material in an object using magnetic resonance imaging comprising administering magnetic material to the object; obtaining a set of T-weighted and T-weighted images of the object in order to determine a background magnetic resonance imaging signal intensity and measurements of the background nuclear magnetic relaxation times (T, T) of the object without magnetic material; and obtaining a set of T-weighted and T-weighted magnetic resonance images of the object with magnetic materials added; measuring effect of magnetic material on the relaxation times; and converting the T-weighted and T-weighted images into a set of contrast images which are subtracted from each other to yield a contrast difference image proportional to the concentration of the magnetic material.

A biological detector includes a conduit for receiving a fluid containing one or more magnetic nanoparticle-labeled, biological objects to be detected and one or more permanent magnets or electromagnet for establishing a low magnetic field in which the conduit is disposed. A microcoil is disposed proximate the conduit for energization at a frequency that permits detection by NMR spectroscopy of whether the one or more magnetically-labeled biological objects is/are present in the fluid.

Biological detector and method

A system and method for analyzing a sample of liquid having an NMR signal in response to a magnetic field for the presence of an analyte. Included is an NMR device having a testing section that is adapted to contain a liquid and apply a magnetic field to the liquid. A complex comprised of a conjugate having a field gradient bound to the analyte that is of sufficient magnitude to quench the NMR signal of the liquid when in the test section whereby the presence of the complex is determined by the absence of the NMR signal.

The system and method also include a container having a binding agent therein that has an affinity for the analyte or foreign agent that is used to remove the foreign agent from a patient's blood or plasma. Blood or plasma is shunted through the container to remove or reduce the foreign agent by extracorporeal circulation.

Physical removal of biological agents detected by a magnecytometer

The present invention provides microcoil magnetic resonance based modules, detection devices, and methods for their use. In certain embodiments, the invention provides a module including a microcoil possessing an inner diameter of between 25 microns and 550 microns, a conduit disposed proximate to the microcoil, in which the conduit is in fluid communication with a sample reservoir, an affinity column in fluid communication with the conduit and the sample reservoir, and a connector for connecting the module to a magnetic resonance detector.

Microcoil magnetic resonance detectors

A smart magnetometer which includes at least one cantilevered magnetostrictive/optical fiber structural bonded composite in a vibrationally isolated housing allowing an optical signal to be transmitted and detected from one optical fiber to another such that fluctuations of the surrounding magnetic field H will cause fluctuating mechanical torque on the composite magnetostrictive beam which will be applied to the bonded cantilevered optical fiber to deflect or misalign and cause modulation of the optical signal transmitted between the two fibers. This modulation can be calibrated to the dynamic variation of strength of a neighboring magnetic field to a precision and sensitivity of less than 1 fT and 1 fT/sqrtHz. The system is smart to selectively filter out any neighboring magnetic field with average strength smaller or greater than a certain critical value. The system is also smart enough to switch from one magnetic field average strength and/or direction to another with different average strength and/or direction.
