Stable cell lines which produce the pathological form of PrP after infection with the infectious agent for CJD provide a high throughput assay to identify suitable treatment protocols and compositions. The stable cell lines also provide rich source of infectious CJD agent. They also may be used to identify vaccine candidates. Co-culture of neuronal cells with cells to be tested for infection with a TSE agent also provides a high throughput method for identifying infected cells.

High throughput assays for transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSE)

Markers for TSE that are present prior to formation of detectable pathological prion protein are useful to detect this infection prior to clinical signs. Additional markers are useful to detect the stage of TSE infection and distinguish it from other conditions which have similar clinical symptoms. Determinations on isolated cell preparations are particularly useful, especially those derived from peripheral (non-brain) sources.

Pre-symptomatic markers for diseases associated with transmissible spongiform encephalopathies

This disclosure relates to a method of specifically decorating selected mammalian chromosomes and of detecting, identifying and and/or quantitating selected individual chromosomes, by means of chromosomal in situ suppression (CISS) hybridization. The method is useful in analyzing cells for the occurrence of chromosomes, chromosome fragments or chromosome aberrations.
