Matrix compositions suitable for topical administration comprising structurally diverse matrix particles formed from at least three different types of primary particle populations where (1) the first primary particle population has an average particle size from 1000 nm to 8500 nm, makes up 4-9% of the composition by weight, and 20-70% of the first primary particle population comprises a glass composition, (2) the second particle population has an average particle size from 250 nm to 500 nm, makes up 5-15% of the composition by weight and comprises UV-protective particles, and (3) the third particle population has an average particle size from 500 nm to 1000 nm, makes up 6.75-22% of the composition by weight, and at least 75% of the third particle population comprises UV-protective metal oxide particles, and the composition exhibits one or more of sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30, a critical wavelength of at least 370 nm, UVA/UVB ratio of at least 0.333, and a UVA1 to UV ratio of at least 0.7.

Structurally diverse, stable, and radiation-protective particle matrix sunscreen and cosmetic compositions and related methods

An anhydrous broad-spectrum mineral sunscreen composition (e.g., compact or stick; which may be untinted, tinted, or contain shimmer-imparting ingredients) consisting essentially of: (a) two photoprotective metal oxides that block, reflect, refract or otherwise attenuate ultraviolet radiation (i) at least one zinc oxide particle, preferably uncoated and having an average particle size of greater than about 100 nanometers (ii) and at least one titanium dioxide particle, preferably coated, (b) two Siliceous Compounds—(i) an amorphous spherical silica and (ii) a mixture of diatomaceous algae comprising at least two, preferably three, and still more preferably all four of, and, wherein each algal species has photonic and porous silica crystals and (c) two Film-Forming Polymers, preferably copolymers of dimethicone.

Mineral, anhydrous, broad-spectrum sunscreen

Matrix compositions comprising structurally diverse matrix particles (1) formed from at least five different types of primary particles distinguishable from one another due to different characteristics, shape characteristics, or both, (2) that constitute 15-50% of the matrix composition by weight, (3) that comprise or more types of particle agglomerates, (4) where at least 33% of the weight concentration of the matrix particle mixture being composed of UV-protectant metal oxide particles having a minimum particle size of over 100 nm, (5) where scanning electron microscope analysis of the composition fails to identify any significant number of discrete matrix particles of having a size of 100 nm or less, and (6) the composition exhibits one or more of sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30, a critical wavelength of at least 370 nm, UVA/UVB ratio of at least 0.333, and a UVA1 to UV ratio of at least 0.7.

Anhydrous sunscreen compositions that include a volatile solvent, an organic UV-filter dissolved in the volatile solvent, a water-insoluble, low-volatility, C-C, liquid silicone dissolved in the volatile solvent, a branched fatty acid ester of a polyprotic carboxylic acid dissolved in the volatile solvent, and a film-forming polymer, where the branched fatty acid ester of a polyprotic carboxylic acid and the water-insoluble, low-volatility, C-C, liquid silicone are present in a ratio from about 3:1 to 4.25:1.

Skin care compositions

Sunscreen compositions containing a discontinuous oil phase dispersed in a continuous water phase, at least 10% by weight of an organic UV-filter, a water-insoluble, C-C, liquid silicone, a branched fatty acid ester of a polyprotic carboxylic acid; and at least 2% by weight of a mineral particulate having a starch coating applied to the surface thereof.
