Superior oxalate ester chemical lighting system

Novel O-oxalylhydroxyl-amine compositions of matter and reactions and to the direct generation of light from chemical energy employing such compositions. By 'light' as referred to herein is meant electromagnetic radiation at wavelengths falling between about 350 m.mu. and 800 m.mu.. Disclosed compounds include diphthalimide oxalate, disuccinimido oxalate, and dimaleimido oxalate.

Chemiluminescence

A chemiluminescent system comprising (1) derivatives of a polycarbonyl compound substituted with at least one nitrogen-containing hetero group and which may have an alkanol or amine substituent, (2) a hydroperoxide compound, (3) a diluent, and (4) a fluorescer, said ingredients in combination producing visible chemiluminescent light and a process of producing such light.
