A wedge-shaped vibration-transmitting plate is located between the bottom wall of a cleaning tank and an ultrasonic transducer which is operable to produce vibratory energy in a liquid bath in the tank. The wedge-shaped plate diversifies the phase of initially in-phase energy waves produced by the transducer and causes waves of different phase to propagate upwardly through the liquid. As a result of the phase diversification, the concentration of high and low power levels at various depths in the bath is reduced so that cleaning action over the span of the vertical dimension is more uniform. In addition, the overall action of wave reflection at the upper surface of the bath fluctuates through a smaller range when the depth of the bath changes. This enables the transducer to be energized with a more stable input power.

Ultrasonic cleaning apparatus with phase diversifier

In accordance with the present invention, there is provided a method for increasing the longitudinally compressive and tensile proportionality limits and ultimate strengths of an elongated structural member by applying to the member a longitudinally compressive load. To increase the proportionality limits of the member, a longitudinally compressive load is applied to the member which is close to its maximum load. In order to prevent buckling of the member under such a load, the member is confined in an encasement which allows the member to yield longitudinally without bending. By applying to the member a longitudinally compressive load much greater than the member's original (i.e., untreated) ultimate compressive strength, both the ultimate strengths and the proportionality limits of the member are increased. In addition, application of a longitudinally compressive load close to or greater than the original ultimate compressive strength of the member also increases the straightness of the member and frees the member of residual stresses.

Method for increasing the buckling load capacity and the comprehensive

A tubular metal member undergoes expansion transverse to the longitudinal axis of the member. An axial compressive load is applied to the member parallel to the member's longitudinal axis, and the member is allowed to deform transversely to said axis. Procedures are employed to control the deformation of the member, to prevent the member from buckling, and to ensure that the ends of the member will be expanded uniformly with the remainder of the member.

Method for expanding a tubular member

A roll forging machine has a pair of opposed work rolls carrying cooperating dies and a pair of support rails mounted on each work roll on opposite sides of the die thereon. The support rails provide the work rolls with a high spring constant, so that the supporting framework can have a relatively low spring constant. During forging the work rolls are urged together with a force substantially greater than the force required to forge the workpiece, and the opposed support rails are pressed together to prestress the work rolls. The dies and support rails occupy only preselected segments of the circumferences of the work rolls, and a pair of backup rolls bear against each work roll on the balance of the circumference. The two backup rolls for each work roll are positioned asymmetrically with respect to the plane of the workpiece, with the backup roll on the feed side of the work roll being located farther away from the plane of the workpiece than is the other backup roll. One hydraulic cylinder urges the two work rolls together, and a second hydraulic cylinder urges the workpiece into the work rolls, with a constant ratio being maintained between the pressures applied by the two hydraulic cylinders.

Metal pipe is planished by passing it longitudinally between two concentric circular arrays of independently rotatable planishing elements which are urged against the inner and outer surfaces of the pipe. The two circular arrays of planishing elements are radially aligned with each other on opposite sides of the pipe wall, and the pipe is rotated relative to the two arrays of planishing elements while the pipe is being passed therebetween.
