A miniature electrochemical cell of a primary or secondary chemistry with a total volume that is less than 0.5 cc is described. The cell casing comprises an annular sidewall connected to a base plate opposite an upper lid. A sealing glass forms a hermetic glass-to-ceramic seal with a dielectric material contacting a lower portion of the annular sidewall and a glass-to-metal seal with the base plate. Since the glass seals against three surfaces of the annular sidewall, which are the inner and outer sidewall surfaces adjacent to the lower edge, the glass seal is robust enough to withstand the heat generated when the lid is welded to the upper edge of the annular sidewall. The lid has a sealed electrolyte fill port that is axially aligned with an annulus residing between the inner surface of the annular sidewall and the electrode assembly.

A miniature electrochemical cell of a primary or secondary chemistry with a total volume that is less than 0.5 cc is described. The cell has a casing comprising an annular sidewall supported on a lower plate opposite an upper lid. The lid has a sealed electrolyte fill port that is axially aligned with an annulus residing between the inner surface of the annular sidewall and the electrode assembly. The fill port axially aligned with the annulus between the electrode assembly and the casing sidewall allows the casing to be filled with electrolyte using a vacuum filling process so that activating electrolyte readily wets the anode and cathode active materials and the intermediate separator.

An lithium-iodine electrochemical cell and method of making is described. The cell comprises a lithium anode and a cathode of a charge transfer complex which includes iodine and preferably polyvinylpyridine. The iodine-containing cathode is in operative contact with both the anode the cell casing serving as the cathode current collector. Preferably the casing is composed of stainless steel that has been thermally annealed at temperatures of 1,800&#xb0; F. or less. The annealed stainless steel has a grain size of about ASTM 7 or finer. When the iodine-containing cathode material in liquid form is filled into the casing, it contacts the inner casing surface. The passivation layer that subsequently forms at the contact interface affects cell impedance during discharge. It is desirable to maintain the internal impedance as low as possible.

An orthopedic reamer cutting tool is disclosed that incorporates a second material such as graphene having an increased coefficient of thermal conductivity to remove heat generated at the tissue cutting surface during use. The reamer is constructed having a hemispherical cutting shell that extends from an equatorial base to an apex at a distal end. A plurality of cutting teeth, each having a tissue cutting surface, extend from the exterior of the cutting shell. A reamer driver interface may be positioned spanning the diameter of the reamer base. The second material, having increased thermal conductivity, may be applied to the interior and/or exterior shell surfaces. In addition, the second material may be incorporated within the shell or the driver interface.
