A cutting body is formed of compacted powder and has a lower side provided with a recess and a spaced protrusion. The body can be used as a cutting insert, or two identical such bodies can be sintered together to form an invertible cutting insert. Voids can be formed within the insert to contain sensors or conduct cooling fluid.

A screw includes a socket adapted to receive the tip of a screwdriver. The socket is tapered and formed by a plurality of sides interconnected by rounded corners. Each side is configured as a surface of a segment of a cone having a cone angle of at least three degrees. The screwdriver tip is configured correspondingly to the screw socket. The screwdriver may be mounted in a power driven rotary arm and spring-biased, whereby a tightened screw applies a rearward reaction force to the screwdriver, causing the tip to be displaced from the screw socket and thereby limit the torque applied to the screw.

Cutoff insert

A double-sided insert includes upper and lower rake faces. The rake faces include chip faces lying on the uppermost and lowermost planes of the insert to respectively define a chip deforming face and a holder-engaging supporting face. Those rake faces are so located that the rake face(s) serving as a support face(s) is disposed closely adjacent the cutting edge to minimize stresses imposed on the insert during a cutting operation.

An insert for chip forming machining includes a polygonal body provided with a cutting edge and a chip former. The chip former comprises a plurality of ridges whereby the distance between adjacent ridges diminishes in a direction towards the middle of the cutting edge, whereby the insert cuts a conical corrugated chip which is forced away from the workpiece during machining.

The invention relates to a tool for chip removal comprising a cutting insert mechanically clampable within a slot of a holder. The insert is clamped by the resilient force arising during deflection of a clamping arm provided in the holder. The insert and the clamping arm are engageable at contact regions separated from each other, a first contact region of which forms an acute angle relative to the lower side of the insert.
