An electrode material based on an alloy or mixed compound, the alloy or mixed compound containing at least two of the elements platinum, palladium, iridium, rhenium, rhodium or ruthenium and, in addition, at least one oxide of the elements zirconium, hafnium, yttrium or magnesium.

Spark plug with specific electrode material

A spark plug for an internal combustion engine is proposed, having at least two electrodes (), one of which at least two electrodes is at least one middle electrode () and another electrode of the at least two electrodes is at least one ground electrode (), and between the at least one ground electrode () and the at least one middle electrode (), a spark gap () is formed. Each of the at least two electrodes () has an electrode base body (). At least one electrode has a region () that is highly resistant to electrode erosion and that forms at least a part of the end face, oriented toward the spark gap, of the electrode (). The highly electrode-erosion-resistant region () comprises an alloy which has at least the elements iridium and nickel.

Method of manufacturing a spark plug for an internal combustion engine

A spark plug having a ceramic insulator, which contains a precious-metal center electrode in a cylindrical, axial opening, at the end on the side of the combustion chamber. A contact pin is arranged in the cylindrical opening, downstream from the precious-metal center electrode, in the direction of the insulator end away from the combustion chamber. To reduce corrosion, the surface of the contact pin is provided with a layer of one or more metal aluminides.
